After being awoken by visions of death, you break down into tears. Ever since your powers had manifested themselves, any night you managed to get some sleep was filled with nightmares. Natasha’s room was adjacent to yours and knowing her to be a light sleeper like yourself, you engulf your face with a pillow to keep quiet. Wanda had long theorized that your nature manipulation abilities came from some sort of mystical connection with the consciousness of the Earth. You had no way of knowing if such a thing even existed, but your incessant dreams of fire and destruction made you think she was on to something. What you did know was that it helped a great deal to have another magically inclined person to talk to. Each night, you wonder why these abilities had to choose you. You were at least somewhat happier living your mundane life in your small, rural hometown. Tonight, though, all you could think about was how you wished Wanda was here to hold you.
Your tears eventually subside as you look over to your clock and read 3:48 AM. You let out a long, heavy sigh. Not even three hours of rest. You had never felt like you belonged in the Avengers’ compound, let alone on their world-threatening missions.
But spending time with Wanda always soothed those thoughts, at least for the time being. Recently, though, time with Wanda had started to feel like an acting exercise. All you could think about was your growing feelings for her, and how you knew she would reject them if you ever mustered the courage to be honest. Although you loved her company, you felt so nervous around her lately. You didn’t want to ruin your friendship with your fruitless romantic thoughts.
You are drawn out of your thoughts by the sound of metallic scraping at your large bedside window accompanied the growing glare of the sun. Stark’s ridiculous automatic blinds.
What a waste of rare earth metals, you find yourself thinking.
The billionaire was always intimidating to you, so you never asked him how to reprogram their timing. And you would never dare to ask the red, snobby A.I. machine that seemed to have an obsession with Wanda, though she would never notice. Perhaps it was your connection to the natural world that turned you off from the Vision, or perhaps you were right to hold reservations against a being that was created by a combination of Ultron, a retired war profiteer, a mad scientist, and a rock from space.
After putting on a comfortable but flattering outfit, you gather yourself and take a deep breath before heading downstairs to dinner. Steve and Wanda were usually the only ones you saw awake at sunrise, but you had heard that Nat always trained from sunrise until noon. As you turn the corner to the kitchen, you see Wanda sitting at the dinner table hardly awake. Steve, on the other hand, was working in the kitchen bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as ever. Steve sharply inhaled at the sight of you. Did you really look that tired?
“Y/N, good morning. Coffee?” Steve asks.
“Definitely,” you lazily reply as Steve goes to grab a mug. “Let me guess, eggs and toast?”
Steve stops and steps to the side in an effort to conceal the toaster and stovetop.
“Perhaps you and Wanda could handle breakfast this morning?” Steve says as he turns around to hand you a full, steaming mug.
You nervously turn to Wanda as she struggles to keep her eyes open with her head resting on her hand. She smiles at the sight of you, and you feel warmth rise in your cheeks.
“Good morning, Y/N,” Wanda manages to say in the sweetest voice you think you have ever heard.
“Good morning,” you can’t help saying without a smile, “how does a professional grade smoothie sound?”
Wanda’s eyes perk up as much as she can muster. “I’ll press the buttons on the blender,” she says.
Steve chuckles. He notices the smiles of Wanda and you slightly fade at his distracting sound. “Why don’t I get out of you two’s hair,” he says as exits with mug in hand.
Shit, you think. Am I being that obvious?
“What was that about?” you say, feigning confusion to break the silence. Had it been two seconds or twenty?
“Oh, who knows,” she says sleepily, “I try not to worry about the actions of a hundred-year-old man.” Her accent was becoming less and less noticeable in the past few months, but it was always stronger early in the morning.
You let out a small laugh as you attempt to not get lost in the sound of her voice. “How about I make you some tea and then we’ll work on smoothies?” you are brave enough to ask.
Wanda tilts her head slightly as her lips curl into a smile. “That would be lovely, Y/N, thank you,” she said with closed eyes.
You smile back and quickly turn to get to work, hiding your hopelessly blushed face. By the time the kettle screeches, you have nearly every fruit and vegetable in the all-too-sparse kitchen arranged on the counter. While filling Wanda’s favorite mug, you nearly drop everything as you feel her hand lightly touch your upper back.
“Hey, that’s my favorite mug!” Wanda excitedly exclaims.
You smile as you hand her the mug. Her fingers brush against yours as the mug trades ownership.
She catches your eyes. “How did you know?” she asks curiously.
“I-I just always see you with it.”
“You notice that?” she says, lightly scrunching her nose with a smile.
“Um, yeah I guess so,” you say forcing a smile.
“That’s really sweet, Y/N,” she says as she steps closer to you. “You know, you’ve been so weird around me lately. Is everything okay? Are your nightmares troubling you?”
“No, no, I’m fine. Just tired, that’s all.” It was getting hard to maintain eye contact.
“Y/N, I can read minds, remember? You know I would never invade yours, but I can’t help but feel your emotions like a wave.”
You watched as her hand went to your chin. She gently lifted your head to meet her gaze.
“Hey, let’s make these smoothies, okay? Then we’ll go watch something in my room, yeah?” she asks, and you feel your body relax.
“Yeah,” your smile genuine this time.
Wanda closed the door to her room with one hand and a glass full of smoothie in the other. You sit yourself on the foot of her bed. Being in Wanda’s room always made you feel better.
Wanda turned around, “Hey, no, you need to lay down. Steve is well-mannered enough to not say anything, but I can see you’re exhausted, dorogoy.”
Your stomach always seemed to sink at the name. “I can’t even finish my smoothie?” you ask jokingly.
She giggles at the comment. “Okay, okay, of course. Maybe I’m too worried about you.”
“Me? Don’t worry about me.”
“Well, you’re one to talk. You happen to know my favorite mug.” Noticing your anxious feelings rise, Wanda grabbed your half-finished smoothie and placed it on her coffee table. As you curiously watched her movements, you couldn’t help but think that she would probably call it a tea table instead. Next thing you knew, she pulled the covers up and got into her bed. “Come here,” she said with her arms reaching out to you.
You knew your face had to be as red as the energy Wanda so delicately produced with her hands. You gave in and crawled under the covers. Wanda was lying to your left, closer to you than she had ever been. You felt her warmth as she laid her head on your chest.
“Oh my gosh,” Wanda giggled. “Your heart is beating so fast,” she said gently.
Wanda sighed after a moment. “Can we be honest with each other?”
“Always,” you quickly reply.
“Evidently not,” she said jokingly. “You know, I can see you when you look at me that way you do. You have been for a while now.”
Is this really happening?
“Wanda, I-” you paused to take a breath. “You have been so kind to me since I’ve been here. Aside from you, I feel alone here. I-”
“No, no, Nat is your friend too,” Wanda said as she unfortunately removed her head from your shoulder to look at you. Your discontent with the loss of her lying on you instantly melted when you saw her hazel eyes so close to your own.
“Yes, true, but...” you trailed off and looked away from Wanda’s eyes.
“But? But what?” Wanda said, forcing herself into your view.
You caught her gaze again. “But I don’t care about her the way I do with you.”
Wanda’s face instantly softened into a smile. “I care about you too. I’m glad to hear you say it.” She slowly moved a hand to brush your cheek with the back of her fingers. “Y/N, I’ve never known anyone like you. Being with you feels like...” she paused to think and met your eyes again. “It feels like home.”
You couldn’t help but smile. Almost unconsciously, and considerably slowly, you move your hand to hold her face. She leans into your hand the moment it touches her soft skin. A hum escapes from her as she closes her eyes.
“Y/N, I can feel your emotions, you know. They’re far more tangible to me than anyone else’s and... I feel the same way about you, dorogoy.” she lifted her face from your grasp and turned to lightly place a kiss on the base of your palm.
She laid her arms on your chest and placed her chin onto her forearm, her beautiful face centimeters away from your own.
You lean into her, her lips eagerly meeting yours. You can taste the sweetness of her from the smoothie you had all but forgotten about until now. After several moments embracing each other, you break the kiss to look at her once more.
The two of you sit there for a moment, perfectly content to do nothing but look into each other’s eyes.
“Now then, let’s take a nap, hm? You deserve it.” she said. Before you knew it, you were fast asleep with your arm wrapped around her.
You gently awoke to find sun’s brightness had increased exponentially. But the overwhelming light was nothing compared to the sight of the smiling woman you found next to you, gazing lovingly at you.
“How’d you sleep?” Wanda said with a hint of pride in her voice.
“I slept... great,” you were surprised to find yourself saying.
“You didn’t have any bad dreams. I can sense it,” Wanda couldn’t help herself from saying.
“Bad dreams?” You let out a deep exhale and smiled at her. “I don’t think I’ll be having very many bad dreams when I’m next to you, love.”
Wanda grinned and wrapped her arms around your neck. She placed a kiss on the tip of your nose and giggled. “Let’s finish those smoothies.”
