"In this second model [where the dominance of consumption over production would be overcome, with a clearer integration of work within the city itself], the hub of social life is not a commercial center but public squares where people gather and discuss, as in ancient Greece. 'Such squares,' the Goodman brothers argued, 'are the definition of a city.' They are not 'avenues of motor or pedestrian traffic' but are 'places where people remain.' The piazza is everywhere — in front of a factory, at the entrance of a small library, or in front of an apartment complex where people meet and start conversations. This is a metropolis where 'work, love and knowledge' are finally integrated, a city where the aim is 'social security and human liberty.'"
