FAVORITE OC DYNAMIC(S): Danielle Henderson + Eddie Munson
You know, I’m glad that you found your way back to my sister . . . and me. I remember how you used to make up your own lyrics to the rifts I played, just experimenting with chords. I miss those days.

My Book Review
Prior to reading The Ugly Cry, I hadn't heard of the author. I spotted the bright yellow spine of the book and the cover while browsing my bookstore and wondered, "Hmmm. What's this kid ugly crying about?" This is a hell of an introduction...an unforgettable one at that. I not only feel like I know Danielle Henderson and her fam now, I feel like we may share the same cussing, fiery, non-sugar coating, caring grandma. Whaddup, cuz? 👋🏽 Lol
You know the saying: Your childhood can affect your adulthood? In her memoir, The Ugly Cry, Henderson paints the vivid picture of her unconventional childhood that brought about joyous and trauma-filled times in upstate New York in the '80s before journeying towards her resilient, bright coming-of-age that molded who she is today.
Henderson reels you in from the jump. Here’s the opening paragraph:
“I’ve never seen my grandmother bake a cookie, wear a shawl, give good advice, or hug a child unprompted. I have, however, heard her curse so intensely I swear she was making some of them up on the spot, watched her obsess over horror movies with an academic intensity, and listened to her frequent lectures about the reasons every woman should not only carry a knife at all times but fully be prepared to use it: ‘A man wants to put his hands on you? Carry a little secret knife. Cut his throat. Ask questions later.’”
See what I mean? Ain’t no way to put this book down after that lol.
The Ugly Cry is an instant favorite I can hug it. The writing is infectious; there's so much personality packed throughout these pages and the audiobook. Like Michelle Yeoh's movie, it gives you everything all at once. It's rich, compelling, raw, vulnerable, intimate, hilarious, heartbreaking, frustrating, anger-inducing, insightful and fulfilling. I look forward to more of Henderson's books.
Imagine if the party... were female
