Here are our Day 4 highlights of the 2023 HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition in Chicago (April 17-21).

Executives from Snowflake, Elevance Health, the U.S. Department of Veteran Affairs and ABACUS Insights had an interesting session on data science and health outcomes. A key point was that legacy technology, if not properly managed, can exponentially derail digital transformation plans.

Christopher Kunney, Senior VP of Digital Acceleration at Divurgent, and a member of the HIMSS Global Equity Committee gave a mini interview; talked about social determinants of health and cultural bias.

Here are our Day 3 highlights of the 2023 HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition in Chicago (April 17-21).

Today I took part in a Q&A session with Hal Wolf, President and CEO of HIMSS.

Two things transpired:

Last year, the World Health Organization (WHO) Regional Office for Europe and HIMSS signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on digital health initiatives. The partnership aims to harmonize digital health transformation efforts in Europe and beyond, and increase the digital competencies of healthcare professionals while monitoring implementation progress. Furthermore, a strategic partnership engages HIMSS and other key partners in a transatlantic coalition for digital health.

In 2021, the German Federal Ministry of Health gave a contract to the HIMSS-led DigitalRadar consortium to assess the existing and future level of hospital digitization. The Federal and State governments of Germany are investing up to 4.3 billion euros on the digital infrastructure of the country's 1,600+ hospitals and must assess the impact of the financing.

Here are our Day 2 highlights of the 2023 HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition in Chicago (April 17-21).

Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge, WHO Regional Director for Europe, gave a presentation on digital health in Greenland and other Arctic communities following a recent official visit to Nuuk, Atammik and Ilulissat. There is a growing use of telehealth in these remote areas.

Generative AI technologies such as ChatGPT have potential in healthcare but you have to ask yourself, what happens in the small percentage when conversational agents are wrong?

The “NursePitch: Nursing Innovation Lightning Talk and Innovation Panel Luncheon” discussed tactics for rethinking, reimagining, and reinventing traditional nursing workflows in order to improve efficiency, minimize mistakes, and improve patient outcomes, as well as the role of technology in assisting nurses in optimizing workflows and improving patient care.

Video: At HIMSS23 Danielle Siarri interviews Jim Kyung-Soo Liew, PhD, Associate Professor of Practice, Johns Hopkins Carey Business School. They discussed the application of generative AI technologies in healthcare.

Today, we are starting our coverage of the 2023 HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition in Chicago. The event will take place from April 17-21. Here are my Day 1 highlights.

CBeP is promising! Some background: The European cross-border electronic prescription (CBeP) and cross-border electronic dispensing system was implemented for the first time in January 2019, when it became possible to buy medications from community pharmacies in Estonia using a Finnish ePrescription. In 2020, pharmacies in Finland were able to dispense Estonian ePrescriptions. The CBeP is a significant step toward expanding access to pharmaceuticals throughout the European Union.

Katherine Collard, an experienced nursing informatics professional (and CNIO of ChristianaCare Health System), thinks robots such as Moxi can reduce time nurses spend “hunting and gathering” meds and supplies.

Great session entitled “Nursing Forum: Nursing Informatics: State of the Practice“ which focused on change management and clinician burnout reduction from a nursing informatics perspective.

HIMSS21: Day 2 highlights

Here are our Day 2 highlights of the 2021 HIMSS Global Health Conference & Exhibition in Las Vegas (August 9-13).

BabyLiveAdvice is a telehealth service that complements obstetric and pediatric care providers (hence the name).

Dr Hans Kluge of WHO Europe: “(don’t forget) the importance of creating affordable services with the help of digital health.”

Also from Hans Kluge: "Data-driven approaches are the future of pandemic preparedness and response and the key to moving healthcare from a reactive system constantly putting out fires to one which prevents the fire altogether."

UC San Diego presented its Nursing + Social Justice Platform.

The VA introduced its nursing documentation project. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, “nursing informatics within the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) partnered within an interprofessional team to create standardized nursing documentation notes reflective of the nursing terms and observations deployed within the Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) efforts.”

The VA also introduced its blockchain project, which aims to “reduce fraud, errors, and the cost of paper-intensive processes, while enabling collaboration across multiple divisions and agencies to provide more effective services to citizens.”

Paramedics and doctors can communicate the patients’ needs using mixed reality then upload records to an EHR via ThirdEye X2 MR Glasses.
