I'm reading The Ancestor by Danielle Trussoni. It was recommended in "101 Horror Books to Read Before You're Murdered" with the insistence that the reader would not be able to guess where the story is going. And that is correct. From reading the synopsis I could never in 1000 years guess where this was going.

2/10 Book Deals

Good morning, everyone! Happy Wednesday to all. :) It’s been another hectic week for me, how about you all? I hope you’re all doing well, staying safe, and staying as relaxed as possible (which I realize is probably extremely difficult lately!). I’ve been super busy which is partially why I haven’t posting these as regularly, so apologies for that! I’m hoping mid-March things will die down maybe a little (??? *nervous laughter*) after I take my MA exam, but we will see. 

Today there are a ton of awesome books on sale to peruse, so feel free to do so if you need any new reading material for the week/end! The Starless Sea had some truly beautiful writing, The Ancestor was super weird, and I read The Righteous Mind and Blindness many, many years ago and can’t really tell you my thoughts because it’s been so long and they’re a bit fuzzy, but those are the only ones I’ve read on this list. I’ve heard amazing things about All the Boys Aren’t Blue and a bunch of other these, so check ‘em out! Have you read any of these already?

I’m reading The Man with the Golden Torc by Simon R. Green, and there’s a chapter where the lead character is this close to joining a secret organization, and then he sees what they’re actually doing, and it’s pretty much exactly what the angelologists in Danielle Trussoni’s Angelopolis are doing: rounding up supernatural creatures and torturing them, vivisecting them, and then killing them, hoping that they’ll exterminate them all. 

And the difference between Green’s novel and Trussoni’s is that Green presents it as so undeniably evil, instead of something maybe morally questionable but justifiable under the circumstances in the way that Trussoni does. The turnaround is mind-blowing and magnificent. And Green’s novel has the protagonist point out how Nazi-ish the whole thing is, where Trussoni gleefully skips past the fact that the angelologists have a crematorium for their captured Nephilim.

Angelopolis is disgusting, in so many ways.

Travel was one way of escaping, but reading satisfied that urge as well. The line you mention describes how I felt during one of the most tense parts of my memoir, but I have pretty much always felt that way about reading. I discovered the world, and language, through books.
