Home
It was a brisk autumn evening when Dan was walking home from the store. The London streets were quiet, and all Dan could hear was the soft humming of street cars and the giggles of happy couples sitting in the park. The leaves had just started to escape the trees, fluttering to the ground one by one. Dan hadn’t seen Phil in almost three weeks because Phil had been on vacation with family, leaving Dan at home to care for their five-year-old child and feel the empty void in their bed at night. He had asked a friend if they could take care of the baby for a few hours while he went out for groceries, but Dan was anxious to get home. He knew the sooner he got home, the sooner he could see his husband and son who were there waiting for him. As Dan turned down the street of their home, he felt the sudden urge to start sprinting towards the house. Dan remained calm enough to think but started speed walking just fast enough to make his trip a little shorter. Dan turned up the drive to see Phil opening the door, already with glasses and pajamas on, smiling at Dan as he held two hot chocolates in each hand. Dan set his bags down and took the mugs from Phil so he could hug him, and feel him finally in his arms. A calming feeling washed over Dan as he launched himself at Phil, too excited to even say hello.
“I missed you,” Dan sighed into Phil’s neck happily. “I missed you so much.” Phil just chuckled at Dan. Seconds later their son Travis stampeded to the door, almost slipping and falling, giggling and smiling to see Dan home.
“Travy,” Phil turned his head, “you need to be careful love, the floors are wet from my shoes,” Dan smiled into Phil’s neck, then let go of his husband to pick his black haired baby up off the floor. Travis giggled and squealed at Dan as he lifted him off the wood floors.
“Let’s get inside,” sighed Dan happily. Phil nodded and helped Dan carry the bags into the house. Dan set Travis down and handed Phil the rest of the bags so Phil could take the bags into the blue tiled kitchen.
“Dan?” Phil called into the other room, unbagging the coffee and milk.
Dan and Travis peeked around the corner, holding flowers behind Dan’s back. Dan quietly handed the flowers to Travis and motioned him to hide them.
“Dan!” Phil exclaimed as his husband walked over to hug him from behind.
“Phil?” Dan said chuckling at Phil’s unenthused tone. Dan knew he didn’t forget to buy cereal, which was what Phil was whining about. He already bought it earlier in the week and put it away. Phil sighed in irritation.
“Dan, did you forget my cereal again?” Phil said annoyed, laying his head back on Dan. Dan reached forward and opened the cereal cabinet.
“Oh I guess you didn’t,” Phil chuckled at his messy haired husband.
“Phil,” Dan said, “Turn around for a second.” Phil flipped around and gasped when he saw Dan smiling at Travis, who was eagerly holding the blue and purple wildflowers up to Dan.
“Dan, I,” Phil stuttered with utter shock. Dan smiles and takes the flowers from Travis. Phil couldn’t contain his excitement any longer, and jumped into Dan’s arms, leaning his head against him with contentedness.
“Don’t say anything honey, I’m just glad you’re home,” Dan said softly as he kissed Phil.
“Bear,” Phil whispered, reaching up to touch Dan’s loose curl, “You are my home.”
