I can’t stand how this one’s filmed—wobbly camera even when people are standing still and beyond close close-ups—and the quality’s terrible too.
It’s mostly an episode about race, which always makes me want to know if the writer was Whitey McWhiterson or not and I couldn’t find out any info on this one. Gary is annoyed at being seen as The Black Cop and wants to achieve things on his own merits, while Danny is pragmatic and thinks that racism will always exist so you might as well make the most of the few opportunities black people get.
It’s nice for Gary to have a focus ep before he leaves, but it’s a poorly paced one, with a lot of nothing and then a lot of A LOT right at the end. Could make a good case from it for Danny/Gary, though…
16.12 The Untouchables
GLAZE: Hey, watch the ‘fro!
Danny comes to the rescue of a man who had been set on fire and gets too involved with the case and his only witness. A strong episode for him, showing his good heart and (rather optimistic) faith in people. Guest starring Neil Newbon. (And wow is he very Astarion in places here.)
16.55 Lullaby: Part Three (Part Two)
A great conclusion to the three-parter, complete with lots of twists and turns and some great Smithy character development. A definite undercurrent of Cass/Smithy, too. The kid who played Tim in the trilogy—Tim Tze—was very good, so it’s amazing that he only has one more role on IMDB.
Again guest-starring Wendy Kweh and Benedict Wong.
16.59 Some Like It Hot (Part One)
BROWNLOW: It’s not easy telling someone they’re overweight, you know. MEADOWS: Maybe you could lose a few pounds yourself.
MEADOWS: You shouldn’t judge Duncan by appearances. You know, beneath that well-upholstered exterior lies the body of a lean and hungry young man. CONWAY: Much like myself.
KLEIN: When was the last time you actually caught somebody on foot, Tone? STAMP: Yesterday. Got that bloke who crashed a minibus. HARKER: Oh, come on. He was drunk. KLEIN: He was sixty-five. HARKER: He had a broken ankle.
BOYDEN: That’s enough. Guvnors might be listening. KLEIN: That doesn’t bother me. Mr Conway’s just bet a pony on Mr Brownlow to lose. BOYDEN: Probably spiking his tea as we speak.

DELANEY: I presume you’re not falling in love with this woman, Polly. PAGE: Don’t be stupid.
I mean, not so very stupid, given that Polly acts like she has a massive crush on Emma all through this episode…
Another solid episode in the trilogy (even if there is less Vicky in this one!) Polly has gotten herself far too involved with victim (or is it “victim”?) Emma. As Reg says, “it’s a classic case of transference, innit?”
I do think it was unfair of Pol to say that Vicky doesn’t like women. She’s definitely not what you’d call a “girl’s girl” but she gets on well with Cass. She’s just very different from Polly in some ways… and perhaps too similar in others.
