16.55 Lullaby: Part Three (Part Two)

A great conclusion to the three-parter, complete with lots of twists and turns and some great Smithy character development. A definite undercurrent of Cass/Smithy, too. The kid who played Tim in the trilogy—Tim Tze—was very good, so it’s amazing that he only has one more role on IMDB.

Again guest-starring Wendy Kweh and Benedict Wong.

16.59 Some Like It Hot (Part Two)

In which Charles learns just what Duncan means by “experimenting”…

PAGE: You wouldn’t go to a counsellor, would ya? BOYDEN: Depends on how many wild horses you could find.

BOYDEN: It’s not the same without you. Miss you, Pol. PAGE: Really? BOYDEN: Yeah. Mind you, after three of these, I’m beginning to miss Reg Hollis.

RICKMAN: You lied to me! HAMBLIN: I’m an MP. What did you expect?

This is so obviously a Richard Stoneman episode. Great lines, brilliant character moments—like Derek giggling when Jack calls Brownlow out of shape; Andrew betting on the squash match; Duncan’s ‘experimenting’ photos—and some deeper moments, too.

There’s some carry-over from the Gentle Touch trilogy, with Polly struggling emotionally with the fallout from her actions, but mostly it’s about Duncan’s quest to put away a long-term thorn in his side… and then to get back some saucy photos said thorn has stolen. Meanwhile, Cass is too trusting, yet again.

16.51 Time to Kill

The dangers of the internet, 2000-style: anonymous chat rooms instead of social media. It’s a decent story, spoiled a little by the acting quality of the person playing the first victim, and June’s fantastic in it.

Ugh, Di is just the cutest.

The manuscript of a former star’s memoir is stolen. Derek is starstruck and Nick is unimpressed, not least because he & Di have to do all the work. We do love a Derek episode, and the other two are an added bonus.
