CENTRAL PARK NOIR: SNOW & PATTERNS

Part 3 (final)

It wasn't long before I seriously started to feel the chill the mayor was warning New Yorkers about.  My right hand was feeling awfully numb.  I was starting to feel agitated.  I figured that's the cue to finish photo taking for the day.

TRANSFORMATIONS OF MR & MRS SMITH...

I love drag.  I love those who can not only pull of the dramatics of the overly stylized feminine mystique, but also those who can embody a full character to embellish that mystique.

I've know my friend Dennis for over 15 years.  The stories he's told me about his life and times, from his youth in his birthplace of the Philippines, to his wild jobs in Japan, to his whirlwind life in America are enough to fill many chapters of many books to last decades and generations.  

Dennis has always been the most dazzling at Halloween.  If he wasn't the best dressed he was always the most embodied into his typically sultry characters.  I wanted to capture that.

So with a Sunday afternoon to spare, we engaged in dress up.  Ensembles would be put together, then the characters would start to speak… the satin green cocktail dress purred "Ivanka", the studded bustier screamed "Vixen Vivica", and the sorted pieces of a scarf, fishnets, and exposed undergarments seethed a "Gypsy Jezebel".  Throw in the house dog, other accessories, a macabre cynical spirit, booze and endless laughter and our Sunday afternoon soon reached late into night.  A blast was had by all… even the dog.

The Ati-Atihan Festival is a celebration of the historic tribal people of The Philippines and their ancestors and the convergence with Catholicism. The festival I went too back in 2007 took place in Kalibo, Aklan, a couple hours journey from the playground of Boracay. The festival is staged on the streets for days and televised over local stations. Watching various groups parade around in the splendid array of colors signifying tribes of the past and playing various percussion instruments - watching them all converge on the streets and listen to their bands create impromptu musical jam sessions - was a slight for the eyes and music to the ears! I hope one day to return, though this time knowing what more to look for!
