SECONDAY RESEARCH - DANNY SANTOS
Danny Santos started photography as a hobby by taking pictures of people in the streets of Singapore on weekends. He now does commercial photography for clients and creating personal photography projects for himself.
There are a couple things that I was really drawn in by with Santos’ work. The style of street portraiture that he does is quite similar to the style I am interested in and when I’m doing my pictures for my project, I want to do something in the style of his work when taking the pictures outside.
However, it wasn’t just his street portraiture that I found inspiration. There was a series he did called ‘Familiar Faces’ that had two pictures taken in the studio and one was a basic portrait shot with not much expression and one was black and white and showed a lot more personality. This is almost exactly what I had in mind when I was thinking about my project except I thought I’d go outside oft he studio for the more ‘real’ shot. Black and white is definitely a really good idea though and I think for the images showing more personality I’m going to make them black and white as Santos does this really effectively.
Photographer Research
Satoki Nagata is a Japanese photographer who originally went to the USA as a scientist. After finding his interest in being visually creative, he worked for two years on the series ‘Chicago Lights’; of which has been a huge inspiration to me in this project. The photos are taken with a light used behind the figures and the flash of his camera on a low shutter speed, creating black and white flash street photography of those caught in the harsh elements. The photos of which have been most influential to my ideas are featured in my mood board. The photos however are moody and of strangers who aren’t posing and were oblivious to the photography, my photos will focus on happiness and contentment in the rain, finding enjoyment in the weather. Danny Santos, a freelance photographer based in Singapore, has also been an influential artist to me in this project- he created the series of photos ‘Bad Weather’, of which are also featured in my moodboard and are similar to Nagata’s work, yet they don’t use flash and there is far more action to the photos- inspiring me to feature more action in my photos at low shutter speed, to experiment with depth of field, and to include mixes of emotions in my photos. ‘I used to always stay at home whenever the rain comes in the weekends. Eventually, I realized how the rain always brings refreshingly interesting scenes on how people react with it.’
WHILE IT WAS WET... Cont.
Brilliant photographers like Danny St. and Mindy Veissid inspire me to be more adventurous with my lens work, and to venture out when conditions aren't exactly ideal to see what I can see.
On a particularly nasty windy and rainy night recently, I grabbed the biggest umbrella I have for the trip home, camera in hand, and here's some of what I saw...
