In her commentary on the DVD, writer Jane Espenson reveals that when she found out that she was going to write 'Earshot' she knew that she wanted the student in the tower to be Jonathan. Even though Danny Strong had only had small, comedic parts on the series over the years, she had faith that he would be able to handle the dramatic scene. “Originally, I auditioned for the role of Xander, but I didn’t even get a callback for the part. Then the casting director called me back in to read for some small parts for Joss, and I got the role of Student #2 or something like that. My big line was ‘are you the new girl?’ Then they brought me in to audtion for some guest star roles during Season One, but I never got the part. Then I got a phone call out of the blue during their second season to play the role of Jonathan in ‘Inca Mummy Girl.’ I think that was the first time I was ever offered a role without having to audtion. I was really surprised to hear from them, because it had been so long since we shot the pilot presentation that I had assumed they had forgotten about me. I agreed that ‘Earshot’ should have been pulled. It was just too similar to what had happened, and I think it would have been totally insensitive to air it at that time. I’m glad that it was eventually aired, because I think it’s a really wonderful episode. Jane Espenson is a fantastic writer. I see Jonathan as someone who just wants to fit in and be liked. I know that some people see him as a geek or a nerd but I don’t think so at all. I think he’s just confused and a bit awkward. He’s the kind of guy that it’s just going to take him a little bit longer than most to feel comfortable in his own skin.” (When asked about the fans) “I can honestly say that I love the fans! This is the first TV show, film, play, or anything that I have ever been a part of that people care so deeply about. It makes such a difference when you go to work and you know that people are going to be excited about seeing what you’re doing.
