About 1D - Larry being the first fandom for many and lack of kudos in GOOD fics. That makes a lot of sense. I mean, the first fics that I read where in the Harry Potter fandom, and the majority were Harry Potter/Mary Sue fics... eventually I found my true calling in Drarry, but yeah, at the very begining we all were very naive and easily impressed.
your last sentence is spot on -- we all were very naive and easily impressed could be the actual title of fifty shades of grey, and i actually think it’s more fitting lol.
but honestly, i remember some of the fics that i read in my early years (around 2005-ish) were all truly terrible bandom high school AUs with five self-insert characters (one for each band member, of course!!!) and lots of making out. and i devoured those, i thought they were amazing. i know better now, obviously (i say as i bookmark yet another sterek fic with high school cliches and lots of making out, lol) but i also think fandom as an entity has grown and expects more, which is another topic.
anyway, totally long answer to say that i completely agree, and i think the lack of decorum and stuff that seems common sense like leaving kudos on fics comes from this fandom on average being really young, and it being the first real online community a lot of people have been in. not necessarily a bad thing, because everyone has to learn somewhere, but it can be really frustrating sometimes.
