Harry felt something wrap around his ankles and next thing he knew he was on the ground. He looked around frantically, and found Lestrange standing there, laughing maniatically at her doings.
He was quick to free himself with a flick of his wand, but before he could get up Bellatrix screamed ‘Crucio!’ and all became blurry.
Harry yelped and screamed, his hands closed tightly and he could feel his nails digging on his skin. Then he heard Ron’s voice and suddenly the pain stopped, he sat up, gasping for air.
“Harry!” His friend yelled over the sounds of the war. “You’re all right, mate?”
He looked in Bellatrix direction, she was laying unconscious on the ground.
“What did you do?” Harry asked, still recovering.
“She’s stunned, but won’t be for long,” Ron said distractedly. “Come on!”
Before leaving, Harry walked up to the woman and took her wand, at least that way she wouldn’t be hurting anyone for a while.
Hurried steps and yelling caught his attention and he found himself face to face with Ginny. A sudden fear and frustration overtook him.
“What are you doing here?” He asked. “I told you not to get out into the battle!”
Ginny’s eyes fell on Bellatrix body, then on her brother and finally on Harry holding the witch’s wand. Something he’d never seen before flashed through her eyes and she said:
“Give me her wand.”
“What?”
“Give me the wand, I’ll destroy it.”
“No! I can do that, you go back–”
“You can’t tell me what to do!” Ginny yelled back.
“Harry we’ve got no time...” Ron started, Ginny let out a dry laugh.
“Of course, you have no time to argue with me– I’ve never been important enough”
Harry turned to look at her, frowning at her attitude.
“Ginny?”
But she wasn’t listening, she was staring at Ron with so much anger that her face didn’t look like the one he remembered, her warm eyes were now two fiery, terrifying voids.
“I’m sick of you and I’m sick of hiding this... this thing,” She spat. “All this anger–”
“Ginny...” He tried again, stepping closer.
“Don’t come any closer!” She pointed her wand at him. “You, our saviour... Ha! If I counted all the people that has died because of you... and you don’t care! You keep pushing us into war and then expect us to follow your instructions like you’re wiser, like you’re stronger... Rennervate!”
Ginny lowered her wand before Harry could understand what she was doing.
Bellatrix’s eyes opened in a split second.
“What are you doing?!” Ron asked bewildered.
“You don’t know all the nightmares,” Ginny continued, trembling uncontrollably. “All the dark and poisonous thoughts I’ve had since my first year here. No one cared! Always so busy helping Harry with whatever he was doing, no one ever asked me… Did you know I saw the snake trying to kill dad? I dreamt it too, but no one asked... I spent weeks trying to fight against it, and then...”
Her eyes lost focus for a second, the grip on her wand losening.
“Then he talked to me again, in my head,” She said quietly. “Tom... he always knew what I wanted to hear... I’ve helped, and he helps with the thoughts, he lets me sleep and I don’t have nightmares... he cares…”
Harry had to be dreaming, this had to be a truly cruel nightmare, something out of the depts of his very own obscure imagination. Ginny wouldn’t, she couldn’t possibly…
“I’m tired of following you,” She stared back at him. “It took me a while... but I don’t think we’re meant to be together”
Bellatrix was still on the ground, but she seemed to understand what was happening because her smile was growing and her lunatic expression of delight announced anticipation.
“Do it,” The woman whispered. “You want to do it, don’t you?”
“Ginny,” Ron lifted his wand, he was pale as paper. “Please, don’t make me do it.”
“What?” She smirked. “Kill me?”
“No!”
“You would only knock me out for a while? Pretend I don’t exist again so you go back to helping Harry? Abandoning me and ignore that you have a broken sister? That I’m sick?”
“We can fix it, Gin,” Harry pleaded. “Don’t do this…”
“Expelliarmus!” Ginny yelled, and Bellatrix’s wand along with his flew out of his grip.
Bellatrix caught both.
“Avada Kedavra!” She yelled.
“NO!”
Ron’s body went stiff and before he knew it, he was gone.
“NO!” Harry threw himself over Bellatrix, fighting to get a grip on his own wand.
There was a flash of purple, and Harry’s body went stiff, but he was alive, he was awake. He was just paralized.
He saw Ginny towering over him, and Bellatrix standing up with difficulty, a deep cut on one of her eyebrows.
“Tom knows better, Harry.” She said simply, tilting her head as if watching a something curious, but not even close to interesting for her.
“Well done, dear...” Bellatrix stepped closer and pulled a strand of her red hair behind her ear. “Let’s take you with our Lord... he’ll be proud of your doings... getting rid of your own brother... catching Potter... well done…”
Harry felt his eyes burn, he knew that he’d be crying if it wasn’t because of the curse paralizing his body. This was wrong, it wasn’t supposed to end like this, he was sure... He was almost there...
“Sweet dreams, hero,” Bellatrix sneered down at him.
