Quick note: this particular kind of magic is from Skulduggery Pleasant, but since this series is largely unknown I’ve opted to lump it in with her dark verse.
She takes the name Rue Bespoke, referring to her by her previous name will rend you a mess of gore on the wall rather quickly.
As a child she was always taught to harness her rage and on how to use it, mostly in attacking whoever was causing the emotion. This control is absent in this verse.
In a fight, Rue relies on her Gist. A gist is a magical specter fueled by the user’s hate, rage, and determination. In this state, Rue becomes catatonic, but she is by no means defenseless. The only way to stop the Gist is to injure Rue, something the Gist will not allow.
The Gist is a shadow-like being. It still holds Rue’s main appearance, but it is by no means human. Fangs protrude from its mouth, clawed hands made for rending flesh from bone, it’s legs appear dragon-like with claws to match.
The Gist is still a last resort, since staying in this state too long could leave Rue trapped inside the Gist instead of it remaining trapped inside her.
Using the Gist also takes a massive toll on Rue. After using it she’s been known to sleep for days after, she keeps a special stock of food to eat after using it since it depletes her nutrients to the point of starvation.
She can harness this state in controlled bursts when angry, but the Gist will only make an appearance if you’ve truly upset her.
Rue is cruel, often killing for the thrill of it without real reason.
This extends to herself. She wears bracers around her wrists that she can tighten till her wrist bruise and bleed. Then she’ll tighten them more.
Pain is intoxicating to Rue. She ensures that she is constantly in pain. If you control her pain, you control her, and by extension the Gist.
