‘Arrow’: Marc Guggenheim teases ‘major consequences’ for Felicity’s Helix alliance

"For Helix, I think you have to look at their roots," showrunner Wendy Mericle says. "They're an organization who's willing to break any law, go do anything in the name of 'protecting the people.' We really did sort of take this from Anonymous and Wikileaks, and we were trying to look at the real world implications of people who do this kind of work. As much as I am pro-exposing some of those secrets that I think some people need to know, there is a dark side there, and that's the line we really wanted to explore with them."

So far, they've had Felicity hack into a Homeland Security drone (giving her zero explanation for what they needed that access for) and shown off their super-invasive spy software that can basically find anyone anywhere. Freaky. For an organization whose favorite pastime is outing secrets, they certainly seem to like keeping their own.

We asked "Arrow" executive producer Marc Guggenheim where this plot is heading in Season 5, and it doesn't sound like it's going to bring good news for Felicity.

"They're a group of uber-hackers -- probably not on the side of the angels," Guggenheim says. "I think the thing with Helix is there will be major consequences for Felicity, major consequences for Felicity's relationship with Oliver, and the introduction of a new character who you probably have not seen the last of."

While we'd always love to meet a new hacker, there's also every chance this "new character" could be Alena (Kacey Rohl), who we'd love to see more of. We know her as a quirky hero-worship-heavy Felicity fangirl so far, but having seen Rohl on "The Magicians" and "Hannibal," it's obvious this girl can pull off dark and creepy just as well as chipper and friendly. We wouldn't say no to her being the show's next major villain.

Whoever Guggenheim is referring to, we're excited at the prospect of a major villain that doesn't need to suit up in a mask to trade blows with Oliver. Action and fight scenes are great, but we'd love to see what "Arrow" can do with a villain who's tech-savvy, and uses mind games as opposed to brute force.

Up until now the only new character on Helix part is Alena. So far I’m not all that sold on her importance and interest for a “stick around” role no matter how good an actress she is / was, in other shows. I haven’t seen anything to pump my interest in the character, still there’s a lot of Season yet to come... I’ll wait patiently.

One note, Alena sound’s slavic; Russian even; Think it’s possible a connection of Helix to Russia?

Olicity After 5X11 – Where We Stand Now

I’m writing this to get out my thoughts on where Olicity stand now after watching Arrow 5x11 Second Chances. So stop here if you don’t want to be spoiled for 5x11. I’m also writing this to reassure myself that Oliver is now paying attention and will be watching over Felicity as she goes down her dark path.

Season 4 Breakup and after 

I’m going all the way back to 4x16, at this point Felicity completely pulled away from Oliver as her heart was broken. I’m not going to analyze this moment, just using it to start off at rock bottom.

 Initially after the break up Felicity made the decision to stay as far away from Oliver as possible – totally get that. This all changed when Laurel died, Laurel dying was good on so many levels ;)

Felicity came back to the team after Laurel’s death but there was still a huge rift between Olicity – when they interacted you could literally feel their pain.

 But as Emily Bett Rickards has said Oliver is Felicity is heart, she could never really leave him. Hence the staying when everyone else left at the end of season 4.

Season 5a

I liked 5a. I just want that to be clear. 5a was all about subtle Olicity. There were plenty of Olicity moments so I never doubted for a moment that they were endgame. 

Felicity may have been dating Billy but she could not say the word ‘boyfriend’ and she told Oliver she was “in awe of him.” Oliver may have started seeing Susan but he really does only have eyes for Felicity, he checked Felicity out as she was talking to Susan. So, no worries in either case.

In case there was any doubt:

But as anyone who read any of my posts for season 5 knows – I am convinced that Felicity is not okay. Given everything that’s happened in the last year: being shot, being in a wheelchair, her father coming back, losing the love of her life, Havenrock – she has some major issues going on. She really needed help. She still does.

I read lots of complaints that Felicity was not herself – I actually appreciated that she wasn’t herself as it demonstrated how not okay she was.

Oliver on the other hand was trying to respect her wishes. And was probably still trying to figure out what was appropriate post-break up behaviour. He knew Felicity wasn’t okay, even asked her about it once, but didn’t push it. This was very frustrating to watch as in my opinion she needed Oliver more than ever. I really don’t think he had any idea how bad off she was because he didn’t allow himself to look at her closely as the break up also hurt him.

 5a ended with Oliver killing Billy and telling Felicity right away. This could have split Olicity up for good but instead the opposite happened.

Season 5b to Now

We are only two episodes into 5b but already we have seen a significant shift in Olicity.

5x10 showed Felicity acted out for the first time all season. Billy’s death was the straw that broke the camel’s back. Felicity could no longer just exist as she had been doing all of 5a she needed to take action.

And boy did she take action. Felicity confronted and let Black Siren go and she physically punched things – a punching bag and Black Siren.

But the biggest action was on the Olicity front, Felicity and Oliver had a fight – a fight they have needed to have since they broke up – I’m not saying they don’t need further discussions or maybe even a yelling match (pretty please) but this fight was raw and told some truths.

Oliver now knows that Felicity is not okay. He may have initially thought it was related to Billy’s death but he’ll watch her more closely now and begin to see her pain. He’s taking note of Felicity’s actions, not judging, just being more aware.

I also think it was very significant that we saw Oliver touch Felicity for the first time since the break up in 5x10, he is letting her in.

In 5x11 we are seeing even more of what seems like old Felicity but this is because she has now given herself a purpose. First to save John and second to take down Prometheus. 

We also see the impact of the 5x10 fight in 5x11, Olicity just seem closer. It’s like some walls have come down and there was the lovely finger touch!

I am very excited for the Dark Felicity storyline but as I watched Felicity open Pandora’s box last night I could not help but feel a little scared. Hence this post.

There were gifs posted earlier today showing Oliver’s face as he realizes Felicity is putting herself in danger in both 5x10 with Black Siren and 5x11 hacking the NSA. These gifs tell me he is now paying attention and will be there to help our girl IF she needs helping. Sadly could not find them to share but I did reblog them earlier...

 I know that this is a journey she has to make alone to grow and create her own legacy but knowing that Oliver will be there for her if need be gives me hope that she and Olicity will be just fine in the end.
