Some things that stayed with me from last night’s episode. These thoughts could turn out to be wrong and the show might pull another 180 on me, but I’m still going with this post. My impressions are overall positive. It’s a bubble thing.
1. Oliver’s rage. When he trashed the Bunker and his interactions with Adrian and Talia. Some might think that him losing it like that is more character regression, him reverting back to island Oliver. I think it was a positive sign. For the past few episodes, Oliver was this milk toast, tepid stranger, letting things he used to deal with in a sure and confident way, get by him without a fight. He let Thea go. His brain fart with Susan and their romantic “going all in” relationship. Seemingly ignoring what is happening to Felicity. His incredibly bad decision making. It was refreshing seeing him lose it. it was a purging that he needed. Maybe that anger will put him back on track and motivate him to refocus on what really matters---Felicity and Team Arrow. What a difference one episode can make, huh?
2. Adrian. I agree with what some have said---the man is one bad, psychotic, angry, hardcore dude. Worse that Slade? Maybe. Both of them are scary. But Adrian has taken it up a couple more notches. And he plays a mean game of chess.
3. Oliver and John. These two are brothers. They are the definition of having someone’s back. John doesn’t and never will hold anything back from Oliver. No sugar-coating or coddling. He tells Oliver the way things are. John is Oliver’s sounding board. And Oliver is John’s family. He is what John always hoped Andy would be.
4. Felicity. Uh, Helix. I guess this is her “going all in” moment. She appears refocused with a new mission to make a difference. Helix and their better resources reminded me of Oliver in Season 3 telling John that he would have unlimited resources by becoming the new Ra’s, that he could make a real difference. Parallels, anybody? It warmed my heart when Felicity wanted to use Helix’s resources to find Oliver, no matter what the cost to her will be. That’s love, my friends.
5. Olicity! There was some good momentum on this front. Oliver realizing he made the wrong decision in getting involved with EWR. Yea, Oliver! And about time too. And the “talk” with Felicity. I have lost count of how many times these two have been in close proximity to one another this season, always hoping they would throw caution to the wind and just kiss already. Oliver will always worry about her. It’s a given, a mortal lock if your will. He took a huge step admitting this to her. He finally let her know that she is not alone. And Felicity recognized this. His insight about keeping secrets from each other and the damage it can cause---Olicity gold! You could see on Felicity’s face shock, happiness and relief when Oliver pointed this out to her. Truth tea all around. I’m buying. When Felicity asked him to trust her, Oliver had no reservations. He has always trusted her, even if her decisions end up going south on her, he will back her play. But the Olicity defining moment for me was Felicity completely worried about Oliver after he was kidnapped. It showed me that no matter what else is happening between them, she still loves him and has a powerful need to make sure he comes back home to her, whole and safe. And Oliver? Well, he hasn’t changed when it comes to how he feels about Felicity, not since that first handshake in 114. He is on her side and would die for her if that is what it takes to make her happy. A big part of his evolution from island Oliver to superhero Oliver is the humanity that Felicity brought into his life. Love, trust, belief and inclusion. Oliver has learned these traits from her and has embraced them. All of this makes Olicity a force to be reckoned with. They are unstoppable. They are…endgame.
Overall, an excellent episode from top to bottom. All the pieces we’ve been give since the season started are falling into place. There’s no more room for worry or doubt. Now we are getting faith and hope and a huge payoff coming our way.
I believe in magic. Do you?
