Steam Next Fest Demos - Part 1

So I downloaded a bunch of demos from the latest Steam Next Fest, which basically was filled with horror. Some of them were from games on my watchlist, while others were brand new games. Here are some quick reviews of the games I tried.

Pathologic 3 Obviously, the first one I tried was the new demo for Pathologic 3. I really liked this demo more than the Quarantine one from earlier this year. They did a better job explaining game mechanics such as how the Prototype works, Daniil's mental illness and its apathy/mania metre. I enjoyed the few hints to Artemy such as featuring one of the dead men who Artemy killed after he was coming off the train when he arrived in town, and having NPCs react to it. It's like his storyline is running concurrently to Daniil's, and I'm interested to see how their first encounter will be seen through Daniil's eyes. I am also intrigued by Daniil rejecting theatre for cinema and I'm want to see how that plays out as the theatre played such a huge role in P2. The one thing I'd pick at would be the "fast travel" which was pretty limited in the demo, it was basically to the other side of a bridge which I don't understand why I can't walk across. Hopefully this will be better in the actual game.

Dark Fracture So this game has been on my wishlist for years and I decided to try out the prologue demo, which has also been out for years apparently. Right now, I'm not too blown away by it. This prologue at least seems to be a typical indie lovecraftian game. The protagonist works at a body farm with poor lighting, and you're walking around finding keys, pills for sanity and other basic puzzles while getting jump-scared when your sanity dips low. I watched a few recent trailers after this and they mainly take place in another world, and I'm more interested in playing a demo featuring those aspects.

A.I.L.A. This demo was basically a PT-inspired wandering back and forth through a slightly changing hallway. To change dimension, you used a TV remote which was more interesting. The puzzles were pretty intuitive on the. most part, but then in the last quarter, I got stuck in a loop I wasn't sure how to get out of and had to look up a video. If I couldn't figure something out in the demo, that doesn't bode well with me. Afterwards, I watched the game trailer and it looks different to the demo I just played. Again, I am left annoyed about the differences between the demos and the gameplay they are representing in their trailers.

Crisol: Theatre of Idols I liked this one a lot. It actually showed you how the real gameplay is. You got a feel with the weapons which use your own blood as ammo. We had a creepy stalker so there will be some stealth elements. I love the aesthetic/artstyle, and game level design is intuitive. Overall, I thought this was a good intro to the game and I want to see more. This is def one of the better demos I tried.

Final Sentence In my first match, I didn't understand what was happening but it clicked for me in the next one (which I won). This is a multiplayer typing game. They have a guy standing next to your desk and he would load a bullet into a gun after you've messed up 3x and play Russian Roulette. The goal is to finish first or die. This game is def for the PC gamers with keys. I felt myself getting competitive and trying to type faster so I could be first. This game comes with a voice chat, and people were talking in one of the matches which sounded kind of creepy. Overall, since I figured out how to play I enjoyed it. I wouldn't mind playing this again.

So, there’s this horror game on Steam called Dark Fracture.

Only the demo is out right now, but I’m probably gonna get the full version when it comes out, and by now, I know myself well enough to know why.

It’s because the main character has a really sexy voice.
