Frigid Forest of Eternal Night 4
A list of some of the things in the Longbox of the Damned
I’m on a bit of a Longbox kick at the moment so here’s another short fanfic about it. Moarte, tells you about a few of the things in his box.
Hello my child! I thought I would tell you about some of the things that the Longbox of the Damned contains. I will look through it and tell you what I find. I can always find something new but once I know that something is in the Longbox, I can always find it again.
Let’s see what it will show us to day.
Horror comics but you knew that, didn’t you?
A cat
Your True Name. Your True Name is not the name you were given at birth or the name you choose to be known as (though it has those too). Your True Name encompasses who you really are and all you will or can ever be. If another person uses that name when talking to you, they will have total power over you. Anything they ask you to do, you’ll have to obey even if it’s to feel the emotion of their choice.
The Necronomicon
The Dark Tome
Another cat
The way into a place where a being that calls itself a mother waits patiently for you with a spool of thread, a needle and two buttons. She has a kind smile and gentle hands. She wants your eyes to be button bright forever. Take my advice, my child, and don’t listen to her. If she has her way, she’ll love you all up until there’s nothing left.
Oh look, it’s a cat
Hope. Oh yes, my child, the Longbox can hold beautiful and good things too (besides cats that is and it really depends on who you ask weather cats are evil or not). Sometimes, in the darkest of places, the brightest lights can shine. Things can get better. A good deed and a kind act can save someone even if that person isn’t you.
A cat. It’s dead.
Does that man have a masquerade mask made to look like the Red Death? I like his style!
Information about how to watch the Gods of the Earth dance upon the top of the mountain Hatheg-Kla without those Gods harming you in any way.
A mechanical bird that flew straight out of hell. It sings so prettily when it hears anyone telling a lie. When it is nearby, the song it sings is so beautiful that people won’t even question the lies you tell.
Gula (gluttony)
Luxuria/Fornicatio (lust, fornication)
Avaritia (avarice/greed)
Superbia (pride, hubris)
Tristitia (sorrow/despair/despondency)
Ira (wrath)
Vanagloria (vainglory)
Acedia (sloth)
A cat. This one is alive.
Information about the Other Gods, the Gods of the Outer Hells that guard the feeble Gods of Earth! Perhaps you should have asked about those when the Longbox of the Damned decided to tell us about the Gods of the Earth. If you’d asked, I could have checked for information about other gods that might be present when the Gods of the Earth dance upon Hatheg-Kla. However, you didn’t ask and the Longbox has only chosen to tell me about the Other Gods now. It’s a good thing you didn’t clime that mountain, isn’t it my child?
Every perfect moment that has and will ever exist. Recorded and frozen, these moments can be visited. They are preserved forever like pressed flowers.
The date, time and manor of your death.
Hope, the other sort. After all, hope can be a terrible thing, my child. We are lucky that Pandora didn’t let this hope out all those years ago. Yes, the Longbox of the Damned has had many names over the years. Through all those centuries and millennia, we have been lucky that none of the guardians of the Longbox have let this hope out. I’ll just lock this hope up nice and securely again before it can do any harm.
*Sigh* A cat. I rather like cats. I wish people would stop putting them in boxes! Schrödinger's cat is a thought experiment. People aren’t supposed to actually do it. My child, if you are ever tempted to put a cat in a box against its will, don’t! If I let it out before its dead, I will know who put it there. Even if I didn’t, other cats will find out. Do you know what happens to people who a cruel to cats? If you don’t, I suggest you visit the town of Ulthar and ask the people there about their law against harming cats.
My story. It’s a good read. Maybe one day, I’ll share it with you.
An apple from the tree of knowledge
An apple from the tree of ignorance
Six pomegranate seeds
Someone’s last chance
A girl in the mirror who’ll come if you call her name three times
Hope. I’ll be honest my child, I’m not sure what kind this hope is. This hope frightens me a little and I don’t scare easily. It’s such a small flame and it would be easy to accidently extinguish it. The Longbox has shown me this hope many times and I always make sure that it stays lit but sometimes I wonder if I should let it go out. I think this hope is mine.
That’s enough for today, my child. I’m going to close the Longbox of the Damned for now. Sleep well tonight and do not fear. I will guard the Longbox. You should be safe.
Well, safe to a point. Pandora did let so many things out after all and we’ve never been able to return all of them to the box.
Sweet dreams, my child.
