do you have a least favorite play? or theatre movements that you have beef with?
with the sole and minor exception of the misanthrope i hate molière so goddamn much it's not even funny
i also have personal beef with the beckett and albee estates for their casting policies about waiting for godot and who's afraid of virginia woolf? respectively. while i do think there is a minor argument to be made about the character of nick being specifically cast as a white man (much of virginia woolf is about WASPyness, nick is meant to represent an "aryan ideal"—which is complicated mildly/interestingly in the film adaptation with the casting of white jewish actor george segal—the nick and george conversation takes on a different but potentially interesting racialized tone if you have an actor of color playing nick, etc.) but i do think that their refusal to even experiment with casting choices in that regard is quite frankly stupid. my generosity does not at all extend to the beckett estate refusing to let women perform waiting for godot it's dumb and citing the beckett line that "women don't have prostates" is a (pardon the joke) piss poor excuse to limit casting. can't wait to helm an all-women production in 2059 when those restrictions lift!
