It had never once occurred to him that this brilliant man could fail at any task assigned to him. He had set aside any suspicion or doubt many years ago, placing his faith completely in the talents of his faithful colleague. When the headmaster asked Snape to accompany him on one of his investigations of the horcruxes, he did not expect the man to be sprawled out on the frosted winter grass, gasping for breath and clutching in desperation to his own silver silken robes.  

“Se- severus...” Albus breathed, attempting with much effort to stabilize him, at least position him in a way that he was no longer choking on his own scarlet blood. He was never much of a healer, nor very skilled in reversing the effects of the darker of magics. At this moment in time, it was unacceptable to him. To be so wise and clever, to be such a legend among witches and wizards, only to fail at the only abilities that could save Severus Snape.

Realizing his own defeat, he abandoned all hopes in reviving him and instead focused on making his colleague- his friend -comfortable. His long thin fingers cradled the head of the dying man and clasped the other’s hand tight in his own. “Severus... I never got the chance to thank you. You have served me unconditionally and long past what I thought was owed so many years ago. And I am so sorry...” Were those tears burning in the corners of his eyes? He could not bare to watch the man struggling below him, unable to respond.

“Forgive me, Severus, as I have done nothing but use you. I’ve become so tangled into my own ambitions and a young boy’s prophecy that I have taken advantage of you.” Snape seemed to let out a heavy sob, shaking his head. It almost made Albus angry that this man would use the last of his efforts to protest. “No, Severus, please. Spare yourself.”

And he could see the raven haired potion master give up. He could feel his body grow weaker in his arms. He could feel the life leaving him. He said no more, this was not about him. He could mourn in the morrow. For now, he allowed Snape to rest, his breaths slowing. Albus freed the hand that held Snapes, carefully retrieving the wand in his robes. A white pure lily sprouted from it’s tip, softly falling, as if it were a feather, onto his chest. It held a gentle spell which relieved the pain, allowing him to drift away in peace. His eyes fluttered closed, one last breath escaping his lips before falling limp in Dumbledore’s arms.

“Severus,” the wizard started, leaning forward in his desk chair and gently setting down his quill. His previous testimony was almost amusing, but nevertheless required his full attention in the off chance his accusations were true. 

“Am I to understand that you believe some of your students might be stealing ingredients in your stores?”
