Darkman 1 (1990), 2: The Return of Durant (1995), and 3: Die Darkman Die (1996)

After mobsters blow up his lab, a scientist is left scarred and traumatised but without the ability to feel pain which increases his physical strength. Using his synthetic skin formula he makes new faces to take his revenge.

 The acting is good in all the films even though the lead actor changes between the first and second film, it still works and the strangest part is how they still use the original actor for flashbacks. The gore effects and prosthetics work well and they’re flexible enough for the performance to still be visible. The relation to science and the rules for the skin which the narrative partly revolves around are interesting and develop a little.

 The second film is basically just a repetition of the first with even the same villain with almost the exact same plan but with some upgraded weapons. Most of the scenes could have been transferred straight from the original because they were nearly identical and even the dialogue followed the same tropes. This was done possibly to cover the transition in actor.

 There are a few twists that aren’t just part of the traditional comic book inspired film; most of these revolve around identity though so they aren’t really entirely unexpected. There’s a little subtext about crime and retribution in each film but the better kind is probably in the third film where there’s some messages about domestic abuse mixed in too.

 The plot is fairly limited because of the specific nature of the protagonist and the limitations to what he can do with his abilities. Even so there is a little variation but the same motifs are repeated throughout each film and even the structure of the scenes appears to be recycled in the sequels. Superficially it’s almost like watching the same film three times.

 Darkman: 4/10 -It’s below average, but only just!-

 Darkman 2: 3/10 -This one’s bad but it’s got some good in it, just there-

 Darkman 3: 4/10 -It’s below average, but only just!-

 -Durant’s finger fetish is supposed to hint at a military background, which is later confirmed by an army photograph seen in his display case.

-Bruce Campbell appears disguised at the end of the first film as the director wanted him to play the role in a sequel which didn’t happen due to schedule conflicts.

-The Darkman character was created after the director couldn’t get the rights to Batman or The Shadow.
