Hey look, I've actually got something to post! Thanks for the tags, @maagisterpavus, @jenn2d2, and @mushrooms-x-moss!

I obviously still can't show off Big Bang stuff, and I don't currently have an active art project I can share that hasn't already been shared, but I did a little work on DA Rogues Week (@da-rogues-week) stuff, so I'm going to show off a sampling of that! :)

If you asked Saadrah, Neromenian smelled like rain, cheap wine, and bad luck. The city’s walls still showed scars from the Qunari invasion several years back, though the Tevinter armies had been able to retake the city eventually, but the city’s seedy underbelly was especially seedy thanks to the criminals and cultists that had swooped into the void the invasion had left behind.

The perfect place for underhanded deals.

Or for transporting illicit goods and slaves, Saadrah mused as she sat with a glass of the aforementioned cheap wine at a corner table in the third-most disreputable bar in town—not too disreputable for safety, but just dodgy enough that no one would question shady deals or passing information or a figure in dark cloak and hood and a conspicuously feathered mask. A look carefully cultivated, of course, to lead people to jump to the exact conclusions Saadrah wanted them to reach.

No one would bother an Antivan Crow, after all, or question her presence in a city full of ruffians and undesirables.

Saadrah brought her glass up to her lips to take a sip. The wine really was bad. Lucanis had spoiled her.

Just a teaser for the event week. I looked at the prompt list and immediately got the vibe of plot beats, so look forward to a Saadrah (Rook) and Lucanis story coming up! (If nothing else, this can give my brain a break from churning out Sonic the Hedgehog prose.)

DA Rogues Week

Day Two: Shadows, for @da-rogues-week

Technically it's still 15 minutes until Tuesday here, so I am totally on time! This one is a series of drabbles dedicated to Lucanis.

"Shadows are your friends." Lucanis' mamae says when they sneak through the corridor of the Villa in the early morning. They will soon hide behind the polished to perfection set of armour, wait for the guard to pass them by like they always do and then go down the two flights of massive stairs and sprint to the kitchens.

Then mamae will sit him up on the counter as she would work on some pancake batter and after, when the long shadow of the plant on the windowsill will hit the cracked tile on the floor breakfast will be ready.

There are shadows under mamae's eyes.

They get deeper and darker every morning and they don't sneak around the corridors, don't make morning pancakes. Instead, papae shows him how to hide and where, and which planks in the floors creak and how to step on them. He knows all the hiding spots in the Villa, deep holes, dressed in shadows and curtains and hanging rugs.

"Shadows will keep you safe." Papae promises after Lucanis lists all the best hiding spots in order of the closest one to his room to the furthest. It's the last promise his papae ever makes.

Shadows are long in nonna's villa in Treviso. They stretch like claws and cling to walls covering the old family portraits. Lucanis swears they move at her whim as she swoops in to oversee their training in the gardens.

She complements his footwork; corrects Illario's grip on the training sword and he flinches when her cane hits the ground with frustration. 'You have to master the shadows.' she tells them. 'Only then you will be safe.'

They are what is left of House Dellamorte. Sloppy technique will not be accepted. Death is their calling and the shadows are their home.

The moons are high on the sky and it's a cloudless night as Lucanis stalks the shadows of Treviso. They mark his path and lead him through rooftops and bridges, towards the lights of a Villa by the seashore.

His first contract. An opportunity to make his grandmother proud, to prove her lessons were not for nothing.

Illario too is out in the city, on a hunt of his own. Lucanis hopes that the shadows are as gracious to him as they will be to his cousin. If all goes as planned they will meet soon among the tavern lights.

A roof, a sweep and a knife in the back.

"The Crows send their regards." it sometimes feels like these are the only words he gets to speak, in between the shadows and blades and contracts. And there's never a lack of work in his profession.

Days blend into nights and nights into months, he climbs a roof in Salle, vaults from a parapet in Ghislain and sticks the landing on the muddy street of Minrathous.

The shadows guide his steps and they are all the same in every city.

Death is his calling. And the shadows are his friends.

The dark is the last to betray him. When he finds himself in a prison with no windows, glistening runes keeping deep waters at bay, it is the dark that is safe. In the light of torches and magic are pain and questions, but the shadows cradle him like his mother once did.

But nothing lasts forever and purple seeps into the safety of the darkness and the blanket of black offers no protection from the voice in his head and the pressure in his chest.

A deal is struck, against the odds and the plans, shadows as their witness.

Voices echo against the darkness. Unfamiliar. Disruptive. Useful for distraction like shadows are for hiding. And he knows the edges and shapes of his prison as well as the calloused back of his hand.

Every time they make it a bit further, but blood binds them to this place. To their captors. So they skulk the shadows and bid their time.

Until a chance presents itself.

The one called Rook offers assistance. Means of vengeance and this time when red spills on the sand it is not his.

The shadows of the ocean deep part, but never leave his heart.
