♝: reading a book together
Taffel blinked. “Okay, stop,” he said. “I’m confused.”
Darrvi sighed and closed the book, expecting another long explanation on his part. “What now?”
“I just don’t know what’s happening.”
Darrvi took a sip of water to clear his throat. “So Juliet’s moirail just came into her respiteblock, right? He told her she needs to be matesprits with Paris because he found out that Tybalt was killed and Paris is the only troll who her moirail trusts to treat her well now that these two ancestral lines are fighting.”
Taffel ran his fingers through his hair and nodded. “Ooooh,” he mumbled. “Okay, that’s why she was all upset. But what happened after that again?”
Darrvi’s shoulders fell. “Have you been listening at all?” he wailed.
“Yes!” Taffel said. “But it’s hard as hell to understand what’s happening when you have to translate basically every damn sentence! Don’t they have copies of this where everything is written like it would be now?”
Darrvi crossed his legs and threw his head back with frustration. “They do,” he huffed, “but reading those takes away from the classicness of this! Taffel, these are Shakespearean sonnets! This writing is the peak of our civilization’s literature -”
“Okay, sorry!” Taffel held his hands up in defeat. “Just explain what’s going on with the Nurse and Juliet for me and we can keep going.”
“How about I just reread the whole scene again, that might help you understand,” Darrvi said, flipping back to some previous pages. Taffel stared at the wall while Darrvi’s voice droned on. And Darrvi wondered why they’d been stuck on the same scene for the past equinox.
