Excuse me but I'm not having a go at anyone. I think it's sad that most people don't know much about countries other than their own. Please don't say that I'm having a go at anyone cause I really am not, in the end I don't care but you don't know how many times people have been shocked cause they just found out that Australia is in the southern hemisphere, I'm pretty sure that most people know where Canada and France are so why not Australia?
Hmmm. Okay yeah that’s strange to not know where some major countries are, but I just get really sort of annoyed at anyone who’s like “oh man I hate that my country is defined by certain things/animals”. I can totally get where that comes from, but the thing is right; better embrace it than hate it. The first time I came here (which was like 6 months ago) ; I had the typical stereotypes in my head, and to be quite honest I was really excited to see kangaroos and eat Vegemite (even though I find it quite gross now). Also, they were some of the first things I noticed coming here. Stereotypes usually come from memorable things that has happened to tourists (or stuff they just can’t experience back home) and they just bring it back; and it’s generalized by everyone else. I have seen so many spiders and deadly things already I have seen an entire alley of Vegemite in a Woolworth’sI have seen so many kangaroos (they’re seriously so so cute)I have seen so many surfer dudes that are hyped to go to the beachI have seen so many “typical” Australian things, that I have heard of stereotypically in Canada, and they were all pretty damn great and also quite common! (not that it’s a bad thing, on the contrary; the culture shock is an amazing experience)Stereotypes aren’t bad, and even if it defines a country, you just have to test them out to find out. I know some countries have much much more to offer than what is said of them, but are stereotypes even half bad as they seem? I personally find them hilarious; and joking about moose and hockey is my favorite thing. Don’t be offended by what people say of your country, and most of the time it’s what people remember the most; or just joke about because they compare it to the said stereotype (since it’s completely different to what they experienced)Canada is defined by hockey, igloos, maple syrup, mooses, bears and snow.I mean what’s bad in that; they’re all great things (especially maple syrup B)).Australia, from what I heard, is defined by kangaroos, koalas, beaches, opposite seasons, vegemite, deadly creatures and ‘the bush’, also possibly bushfires.I mean, for me all of them are pretty great and are cool things to explore. Opposite seasons is actually so weird for me, and it always takes me a while to think about. June is winter and December is summer. It just amazes me every time. I’m really trying to get my point across, but I can’t seem to get there but anywho. I hope you catch my drift. I didn’t mean to be rude I’m sorry, I just thought getting an outsider’s perspective could be interesting! I just think that stereotypes shouldn’t be taken on the rude side, because they’re things to laugh about most of the time. most of the time; but yeah some countries’ stereotypes can be pretty bad, but I don’t think Australia is one of them. But yeah, sometimes some people just don’t know man! Like, I have to explain what sugar shacks are, and what hockey’s all about, what poutine is, and how bears don’t roam around everywhere, and basically what we do in canada all the time; but I’m so happy to do so because you know; it’s fun ? And plus, the person probably doesn’t have a clue either, so you educate them too ^-^
