just rewatched thine own self and i am feeling things about this interaction

DATA: Where is your mother? GIA: She died about a year ago. Father says she went to a beautiful place where everything is peaceful and everyone loves each other, and no one ever gets sick. Do you think there's really a place like that? (Data gazes out at the moon and stars) DATA: Yes. I do.

oh data... i think this shows more strongly than anything else how intrinsically optimistic he is. he doesn't remember anything here, the only things he knows are basic principles and knowledge. apparently one of them is that there is a place like this out there. the way i see it there are 2 possible explanations for this. either soong programmed him that way because juliana told him to or because he wanted to give data some faith in the world he doesn't have himself (because he doesn't seem like he really believes in a place like gia described to me), or data's experiences with the federation have become so ingrained in who he is that they changed his brain circuitry so to speak

either way, data believes in a good, beautiful, utopian world as a core part of his being. probably more so than anyone else on the ship. i wish we'd seen how that informed his decisions throughout the show. what was it like for him to talk with tasha and learn about everything she went through? what kind of mistakes did he make because of his intrinsic belief in a good world? if data has it because he was programmed that way by soong, did he even still have that belief in such a beautiful place or had it already been changed by his experiences at starfleet academy for instance before he started on the enterprise? and if he got this belief through being in starfleet (like he seems to have gotten so many of his core principles, like wanting to be human. which is a whole other can of worms because what would have happened in data's head after finding out he's not in fact an ice man in thine own self if he'd been given more time as jayden?)? it would have been interesting to see data develop the core belief that there is a good and beautiful world throughout the show's run and see how it persists despite the injustices data witnesses

sorry if this isn't very coherent but just. data intrinsically believing in a good world is everything to me. it's at his core as deeply as his desire to help and his logical thinking. and it could've been so so interesting and cool to explore that further but despite a plethora of data eps in the show i don't think that opportunity was taken very often. shame

what kills me about data's character arc is that he's an autism allegory and the arc ends with him Fixing His Autism. like no shut up he was fine the way he was!!! he wanted to be human because from the moment he was born he was told he would always be lesser for not being one! but he was wonderful and conscious and complex and not so human but one would think in a universe of millions of species that Human shouldn't be the highest ideal
