34. Was there any fic that you wrote that really surprised you in the fandom reaction? Was it just by the numbers or did they take it an entirely different way?

Honestly, I’m still shocked over the entire Hot For Teacher series. Like, when I came up with the idea I figured “Damn Alex, you’ve reached a new low with this one nice job” and basically I decided that I was writing the fic for myself because who would want to read an entirely smut filled fic about a teacher and student having a secret affair on campus?? I had no idea how people would respond to the age gap or to the teacher-student relationship, so I essentially wrote the fic and resolved to never publish it. 

Well, about a year went by of me working on Learning to Love and I was just losing my mind because I wanted to talk about it with people, but alas, I was the only one who knew this fic existed and you can bet my bf did not want to hear about all the crazy ways I could make Makoto and Haru fuck on a desk, so I decided to publish it. It was similar in format and length to I Could Count the Stars..., so I hoped that perhaps it would receive the same kind of praise as well. However, I was really blown away by the interest people seemed to take in my little teacher AU. I know it’s nowhere near the level of a Macbetha fic or something like that, but still, I was pleasantly surprised that people were enjoying it and actually wanted to hear more. 

I took another year to write Let’s Start From the Beginning, with much more planning and thought put into it (although even then, I’d say it wasn’t quite enough), and I was thrilled to talk to the people who kept up with it chapter by chapter. I was still pretty embarrassed because people must think I have some crazy teacher fetish now, but it’s the only story I’ve ever wrote that I feel like is truly mine in the end. Like, I didn’t read a bunch of teacher fics and then decide to write one too or anything like that. I just thought of it one day and boom, here we are. Now, I’m sure it’s still quite similar to the hundreds of other teacher au’s out there, but the point stands that from start to finish, I created this story without the help of anything else (except for using the lovely characters from Free!, of course), and I’m really proud that people actually liked my ideas and the narrative I created. 

Anyway, I guess for me, the numbers were somewhat shocking- although I can’t help but compare myself to you, Joella, or other fic writers and think “people would rather read a work like this by one of them” because I see the kudos/comments on your fics and, well, you know how the mind works. But in the end, what surprised me more was the positivity that people left in comments, and the fact that I made my closest friend here (@anunyun) and met several other talented folks because they were creating fanart of my Professor Tachibana and Haru. It was just really shocking to see other people investing their time to create art for me and the fandom because I had invested time into making this AU. I truly felt honored by it all.

So yeah, that was really long winded and sappy but I think that really is the most surprising fic response I’ve ever gotten!

Hi! I have a question regarding fics to submit. Is there a guideline to the word count per submission (for example, maximum 5k per work) or is any length acceptable as long as it's not a chaptered work? And if there is a limit, can we simply submit a segment from a longer fic and link back to the entire work at the end? Thanks again!

The word count is 3k or less for single-chaptered fics, and you can submit segments of longer fics with a link to the entire work at the end!

For now the maximum is approximately 1200-1500 words or 4-5 pages for the fics.
