This will be a short story. Though it reminds me that people are fickle and stupid.
Friend of mine messaged me about a week ago. I was on vacation back home in Texas. Have not heard from them in probably 3 years. She's a woman, 28 and she's done similar to me with her choices in work. Military for several years, then money trucks, then corrections. She's "technically" bisexual according to her own words because she ALMOST exclusively dates women. Rare exceptions happen with men, though is been very very few.
Anyways, she's been using a date/community app for a while, and she got to talking with a person she was pretty into. Well they asked her what she did for work and she responded with her job, which is currently corrections. The response she got was, "Appreciate your candor, but no thanks". Followed by a block. She had no clue what was going on, nor why it happened, so she reached out to me to try to ask if I've had any similar experiences. Honestly? I have not. I did back when I worked for security though because people thought I was a cop. Which I had to often quickly correct. But here's the thing. It's honestly really stupid and I feel bad for her. And many others.
Let's look at this objectively. Prisons need to exist. They just do. We can't just execute everyone that breaks the law, but more over, the system gets things wrong. It's often why I'm very much against the death penalty. Unless there's zero room left for doubt. Which is often rare. But here's the thing. Rapists, murderers, child molesters, child abusers, and violent criminals of all kinds go to jail. Even if you are dumb enough to say some dumb shit like, "abolish prisons" you need to be aware, that they have a place in society. Because if you do believe in abolishing prisons, I vote we, the tax payers, buy houses next to everyone that want them abolished, and we'll bail out the most violent, and move them in all around you.
See how fast you change your mind. Which shouldn't take long. You'll be peeking out your windows non-stop. Might even make you pray.
But my sarcasm and annoyance aside, not so prisons are awful places to do shitty things. The staff, at the end of the day, are made of people, and the we have to observe, and keep the inmates safe. Even from each other. Wouldn't you rather decent people do that job? Rather than raging violent hot heads? What's more, prison shows are terrible for the image of prisons in general......... Because Hollywood. So I know why my friend got blocked? No. Could it have been as simple as, "I've been in the system before, and I don't want to deal with that"? Could it have been, "I've dated people in this job and it's bad for everyone"? Could it have been that she was a, "abolish prisons" or, "defund the police" type? Any of them are possibly.
At the end of the day, I told her it's not a loss. Because no matter why it happened, clearly it was not in the cards for her and she has so many other options. So I think that a legitimate job should lose you a possible partner? No. But sometimes, depending on the job, I can see a conversation being had. Which goes into the world's shortest rant.
I'm sick of people who refuse to communicate.
"Thanks for coming to my TedTalk".
