Beginners Guide to Tuning
So you want to get into tuning your 240sx? This article will be split into multiple parts, starting from the basics to more advanced things. This will be part 1: Burning a tune.This will be for both KA24de and Sr20det since both ECU are 16bit and extremely easy to work with. There are 2 ways to go about this and lets start with the cheaper of the two. This will be for those who don’t have much money to spend. This method is not cheap, although it is not very expensive. Lets begin!
Basic and Cheap Tuning Method
Hopefully if your reading this article on tuning your 240sx you have already read ,“How to install a daughterboard” and are simply continuing your journey of tuning. This method is how most people start, even myself. There are systems out there that can range from $400 up to $1500! Let’s not go there right now! The most you will spend is a $180 and that’s rounding up. That is also assuming you already have chipped your ecu. Here is a simple break down on what the prices are for:
Moates Burner 2
- This is the burner or programer you will need to burn your .BIN files or “tune” to your chips. Essentially this is the most expensive part and you only need to spend this much one time! Buy Moates Burner 2 Here!
Moates Nissan Daughterboard
- The heart of this whole ordeal! You only need 1! It can be used over and over! Buy Moates Nissan Daughterboard Here!
SST 27SF512 Chip
- Here is where your .BIN or tune will be held! You need 2, since these chips are both 8bit chips, so 8bits + 8bits=? YES 16bit! Perfect for our 16bit ECU! Simple right? You can buy more for a quit tuning method: have 3 sets of chips, for 3 different tunes, try 1 set, don’t like it? swap the 2 chips for another set and keep going till you find the perfect tune. Now you need something to burn your .BIN or Tune to your chips right? TunerPRO mentioned above can do it or you can Download Moates Chip Burner Here!
**I take no responsibility for any damage done to your property!** Lets face it, you mess with a tune, burn it, and start your car and go test it. You do a 3rd gear pull, and you magically lean out and fry your engine. It can easily happen! You would be surprised on how often it happens, so please before you proceed have a wideband installed and working. A wideband is needed to fine tune your engine. Running lean is a big No NO, but running rich is also crappy. Buy a AEM UEGO AFR Meter here.
How to Burn a .Bin File Tune
Now I’m assuming you have already gotten everything needed? Daughterboard installed, chip burner ready, 2 chips ready? If you are nodding and saying yes, Lets begin! We will be using Moates Chip Burner for this tutorial. Plug in your burner now, and proceed to open the program. Now your screen should look something like this with Moates burner open.
Select 27SF512 since it is the chip set we will be using. You shouldn’t have have to worry about the Chip Addressing or Buffer Addressing since this program already changes the settings, Neat right! Now click erase chip, the process for these chips to function need to be erased first, it’s just the way these chips are. Once erasing is finished, click load file to buffer. Here is where you select your .BIN file or “tune” you will be burning. When you have selected your tune take a guess on what’s next! BURN that tune to your chip! If you receive a “successful burn” message you have burnt your first chip the right way! Now remove your chip, place the next chip in, erase, and burn! Now you have 2 chips with the same tune, place them on your daughterboard and you are set!

So you want to install a daughterboard on your 240sx but don’t know how to do it? Here is a very user friendly walk through on installing one. This goes for any daughterboard whether it’s from Moates, or Nistune, or even Nismotronic. It’s all the same. Today I will be showing you the installation of a moates daughterboard on a 1992 Nissan 240sx ka24de ECU.

Moates – Offers Chip burners, Emulators, Chips, and so much more!
Nistune – Is especially designed for Nissans having different type boards to work with any Nissan ranging from rb20det to vg30dett. Well known for there real live Data Tuning. Tune while the car is on and running! simple click burn methods really makes this method one of the best!
Nismotronic – Another Live tuning method of which I am not to familiar with. I spoke to a few people who have experience with Nismotronic and they simply state it is more user friendly.

What is needed to Install a Daughterboard?
Everything you need to chip your ecu can be found at the Moates website, link provided above.
1 Nissan Daughterboard
Minimum 2 SST 27SF512 8bit Chips
1 2×20 Pin Board
Walk Through for Installing Installing 240sx Daughterboard
The video provided will explain everything in a more in depth detail but here is a quick walk through. 1)First remove both front and back covers of your ecu. 2)Find the 2×20 mount located next the the red LED light. 3)De-solder the mounting spot. 4)Press on the 2×20 pin board with the short pins going into the board, taller pins sticking out. 5)Turn board over and solder each pin, careful to not have 2 pins solder touching. 6) while the board is upside down, look or the marking CJ1. It is on the underside just behind the red LED. 7)De-solder the little jumper from cj1 and drop it down or make a new jumper and solder is in the same direction just below cs1 so it will be on cs2. 8) once the 2×20 pin board and the jumper has been done, you may now install the daughter board.
You are now finished!

Construction Phase week 2:
18-24 November
We linked the daughterboard to the motherboard, and the motherboard to the TCP server and connected the TCP server with the database. We did some test and the database filled up as soon as the motherboard and the TCP server connected and exchanged some messages.
We also integrated a new type of I2C communication between the daughterboards and the motherboard. We now use an interrupt-driven communication instead of the mainstream polling, this way the records are more unique(less duplicates) and we can directly see when and where changes occur.
We added the code for the RGBLED in our design, so the devices can easily be debugged without using the serial monitor. We cleaned and revised our code on the back-end, we structured it better using custom hardware libraries and added some needed comments.
Furthermore we needed to document our system for the Design Model, so we drawn some Design Class Diagrams, Design Sequence Diagrams, Package Diagrams and wrote a few Operation Contracts for the hardware and the back-end of the software. The Design Model needed some more artifacts so we added database models and some sketches and prototypes.
In week three we are completing our hardware and software back-end, make some beautiful product design renders and finish the Design Model.
Construction Phase week 1
Last week sub team Hardware made some big steps towards constructing a prototype. Our idea is that we are going to implement a master-slave protocol to communicate with multiple devices inside the train.
At the start of the week we designed our daughterboard in Eagle (schematics and board lay-out).
On Thursday(14-11) we were able to mill our daughterboard with Mr. M. Pineda.
Concluding the week we were able to prototype the individual components and solder some components on the daughterboard already.
Furthermore we made some initial steps towards creating a good database lay-out.
We are currently working on the Motherboard and the OmegaInterface, we will give some more information about this development next week, so stay tuned...
