Love your 240sx? Think you know everything about it? Perhaps you might but did you know that carbon is a by-product of combustion? Great combustion means a good running engine right? Right! It’s a fact that not everyone has 1997+ Kouki’s most of us have S13 and if you do the math over 16 years of carbon build up is hanging out inside out engines. Carbon deposits have a measurable effect on engine performance, resulting in higher oil consumption, reduced fuel economy, engine knocking (pre-ignition or detonation), hard starting, higher emissions and even overheating.
Whether you only drive your KA24, SR20, or even RB20/25/26 short distances or long both are susceptible to large amount of carbon build up. Decarbonizing sounds quite technical but it’s really quite easy. Sea foam is one of the best ways to remove and prevent carbon deposits. Now this is quite easy to do and ideal for higher mileage 240′s. If your 240sx is in the higher 180,000 mile marks, go ahead and grab a set of new spark plugs, and oil and filter for an oil change.
Sea foam has been around for years, probably because is simply works great. Its uses are as follows:
**when added to your gas tank, cleans injectors and or jets in a carburetor
Frees frozen or noise lifters
Cleans our carbon deposits
Lets Begin Sea foaming Your Engine
Grab 2 cans of Sea foam Original from your local Auto zone, Advanced Auto Parts, or Napa Auto Center.
NOTE: Be sure to do this in an open area, not inside your garage, or near a group of people. You’re going to make more smoke than a reggae concert.
Be sure the engine is at operating temperature. Start your car, drive to the nearest gas station or quick stop and buy yourself a coke and a bag of chips. Be sure to have half a tank of fuel for this to work better.

Now that your 240sx is at running temperature, while running, grab a can of sea foam open it up and pop the hood of your car. Now look at that large hose on your firewall going from the break booster to a air check valve, and then to your intake manifold. Carefully “watch your knuckles” pull the vacuum line from the intake manifold side of the check valve. Be sure the check valve stays with the booster side. Once off you will notice the engines idle goes up, this is normal. Now grab your sea foam and using your finger to control the diameter of the hose so it isn’t sucking too much air, slowly poor the sea foam into the hose. Don’t worry about spilling any, the vacuum will suck it all up.
The proper method is to poor 1/8th of the an at a time. Once you are around 1/4 left you will notice the smoke coming from the exhaust. Take note: smoking is normal so don’t panic.
Now that your have 1/4 left here is where it gets crazy. Push the vacuum hose all the way in the can, let it suck up all the sea foam. You will see and hear the engine start to chug, kick, and overall sound very upset. Either go walk and shut off the engine RIGHT AFTER you let it drink the rest of the sea foam or have a friend shut it off.
Now is the time to open that drink, nibble on some chips, or have a smoke break. That last shot of Sea foam is soaking in to the valves, and top of the head. Let it sit about 30 minutes or so to really do its job.
Now fire up your car, might be a pain considering the build up and sea foam in there. Once it’s started it is going to smoke like a train! Close your windows and go to a place where you can do a few 0 mph to 50 mph pulls. Stay away form main roads, and groups of people, you can cause an accident from whats about to happen. When you do your first pull you will notice the car feels very sluggish and lazy. This is normal. The amount of smoke will freak you out, this too is normal. After 5 or 6 pulls you should notice the smoke slowly going away. Drive back to your place. Let the car cool down and sit for about 15 minutes.
Now that your engine is sitting, perhaps you nibbled on some chips and had something to drink or a smoke, grab that second can of Sea foam. Now for our KA24 and SR20 poor about 1/3 of it into the oil. If your have an RB go ahead and poor a between 1/3 to1/2 of the can into the oil. Now you have half a can or so left, what should you do? You can save it, or simply poor it into the gas tank. This is why I said early to make sure you had half a tank, it works better than way. Drive around for 1-3 days and then do an oil change, the Sea foam has broken up a lot of the slug inside your engine. Now is a good time while the oil is draining to put those new plugs in if you haven’t done so in a while. I run NGK in all of my 240′s. When your done, if you decided to keep that last 1/2 a can of Sea foam, and you saw slug come out of your oil, go ahead and put that into the new oil for next time.
