Spite Week 2025 Day 7!!

Behold, True demon Spite in my Rook's canon universe!! His many eyes manifests as peacock feathers and his wings have been restored from their skeleton form.

The thought of Rook picking up on when Lucanis is looking at Spite (specifically when Spite is looking at her), and using that to fuck around with Spite by pretending she can see him is so fucking funny to me especially with MW!Rook.

Lucanis is 100% in on it whether he realizes it or not 😂

So, Im getting into Dragon Age...

By playing it backwards, currently doing a 'find all the things' run of Veilguard.

And, considering the production hell that this game went through? I think its pretty solid. I think a lot of the content in the scrolls could have and may have been planned to be playable but its overall pretty good imo.

But thats not what I wanna talk about, I have a thought and if someone more familiar with Dragon Age lore can give me more info, I'd be very grateful!

So....Spite....isn't technically a demon by the worlds definition.

From what I understand, demons are spirits that have become all twisted up by negative emotion or mortal intervention to make them malicious. And the group also comments on how Spite doesn't behave like a normal demon.

He CAN take over Lucanis' body but he seems to have a lot of trouble doing so and the only influence he seems to have on changing Lucanis' physical form is some minor physical pain if he's pissed enough (maybe? its kinda unclear how much those nosebleeds hurt), manifesting the wings and maybe some minor magical abilities. Not to mention the handful of people and spirits that say he's a spirit of determination, so Spite is not the primary emotion he draws from, merely a side effect.

So, from my understanding, Spite is still a Spirit. One who has unfortunately been forced into the body of a mortal. But rather than becoming a demon and just remaking Lucanis' body into something he wanted, he struck a deal with Lucanis to escape and get revenge on Zara.

Now, again, if I've misunderstood how spirits and demons work in Dragon Age my bad. BUT! I find the thought fascinating for Spite and Lucanis' dynamic. Because yes, most of what we see of Spite is his anger, impatience, a very strong bloodlust for sure. But of course, we see that, he's basically a kid who got dragged into an awful situation by Zara and had to stay with Lucanis to survive. But the fact that, despite the hell he's going through, he hasn't turned into a demon says something about his fundamental nature. I think it shows that he does care about Lucanis, probably in a trauma-bonded way but he cant express it in a way Lucanis understands because, again, basically a kid who got kidnapped by a crazy cult mage.

I do wish the game had more chances for Rook to chat directly to Spite because his situation feels like an untapped well of potential and I have seen almost nothing talking about it (hence why I'm also wondering if I've misunderstood how spirits work....but also want to drop my rambling into the void lol)
