Spite Week 2025

First of all, @dread-red-queen thank you very much for organising the event 🖤 The prompts were great and I had the opportunity to experiment a little.

I wanted to do something for Spite week since he is my favorite funky little purple guy, and then I didn’t! And then I kinda did, but lost the prompt a little.

A little ficlet about nothing, in Spite of myself. (And absolutely full credit to @blightwashed, I borrowed your brilliant formatting inversion and I hope you will forgive me.)

Spite does not sleep.

A mortal nuisance. So many of these. Never-ending cycles, to fill the body and then empty it again, to wash it, to preen it, to lay it down. Hours wasted. Every day. Stupid, these shells. So fragile.

Lucanis did not sleep, or tried to not.

Failure, always, eventually, but he did try. Another nuisance, but a tangled one. He would not sleep so Spite could not wake and it sat bitter and burning in the places they are bound. Lucanis who promised freedom as he braced the cage, little hurts to his own shell if it meant Spite would also know the sting. But Lucanis would not so that Spite could not and that was… a push-pulling. A satisfaction he did not want, angerpeace, a knife held by the blade and relief in the bite of the slice. Confusing.

(“An appeal to your nature,” Emmrichvolkarin had once told him. “Both of yours, I suspect—for better or worse.”

“Give it time,” he had also said. Again. Time, always. Another thing Spite must suffer now.)

Rook can not sleep.

Spite learns this late, long after Lucanis has opened his fist and let the knife fall. It goes many ways, tossing and turning, or fingers in their hair and little whispers, or sometimes a heart that beats too fast and eyes that do not blink against their fixed stare at the ceiling and lips that do not want to speak. But on his favorite nights, it goes like this:

“Okay,” Rook says, the heavy breath that is a yielding and legs that kick free of the blankets. “I’m calling it.”

(Lucanis does not like these nights. Within the boundaries of the place that is home now, Spite can do as he pleases with the body while Lucanis sleeps. Mostly. It is acceptable to both, this agreement. Mostly.

For Rook, though, Lucanis worries. Scolds them.

Mierda, I’m not scolding, Spite, but she’s not like us. She needs to sleep.

“A secret,” Spite offers Rook, after one such time.

Rook does not like secrets. “You know better than that,” she tells him. Fingers on their fingers, though. A smile. Rook does not scold.)

Spite floods to the body, calls muscle and bone to his command. It moves. He moves, from the bed to follow Rook, a hurry to the steps that calls her laugh. “We go? Rook?”

“Yeah, let’s go.” Rook looks, laughs again, little wrinkles on her nose. “Don't forget pants, though.”

A nuisance, the soft parts. Pants, from the floor. So many nights, this ritual, Lucanis putting on the pants, laying with Rook, taking them right back off. Pointless.

She wraps herself, a shirt that is also Lucanis’ but now will smell like Rook. He will like-not like that. Will know they have wandered before he is told of it, will worry for Rook. Unnecessary. Rook is with Spite. She is fine.

“What do you feel like tonight?”

This, Spite knows. He has waited. Rook, gone for days, then returned but smelling of blight and blood. Too tired to not sleep, and Lucanis warns, pesters. Don’t wake her. Again, unnecessary. Spite would not. He waited.

“The book.”

Rook stretches. “Okay. I’m going to make some tea and I’ll be right up.”

Spite goes. Down the dark hall, a door at the end. This room is for Spite.

How do you find anything? Lucanis complains when Spite brings him here, but Spite does not bring him here often. Lucanis may take the body to any place but he does not take it here without Spite’s permission. This agreement is acceptable to both as well. And he has given to Spite the desk and the chair and the books to write in, and the couch where Spite sits with Rook, and turned the soft yarn to a blanket. The blanket is Rook’s, but all the rest is Spite’s. This is the place that belongs to him.

Spite likes it when Rook is in it, too.

She comes, soon, with her mug that smells like mint, and calls the fade through the candles so the wicks catch to flame. She does not come to the couch where Spite waits, though. Rook looks at the shelves.

“This is new, isn’t it?”

“I visited Curiosity. While you were. Gone.”

It brings her smile. “And he gave you this? Can I touch it?”

Spite nods the head. “We found. From a new place. Still digging. Myrna said I. Could keep.” Rook turns it in her hand. Flame flickers light the sharp lines. Gold, not green. Green at the Necropolis, gold in Rook’s flames. Shifting. Spite likes that. “She says—pyrite.”

“Very nice.” Rook places the stone back on the shelf, just as she found it. She sits in the place that is hers, with the blanket that is hers, and takes the book that is Spite’s from the hands he stretches out.

(Lucanis did not like it either, this book, discouraged it, but Rook has insisted. She wanted to. She wanted to with Spite. They read this book together.)

Rook drinks her tea and waits for Spite to curl the body in the way they like, the head on her legs so Spite can watch little ripples in her face with the feelings in the words.

“Sixteen, right?”

“Yes.”

She smiles down at him, and opens the book, and starts to read.

“Donnen left the tavern and headed out through a moonless night. Fog clung to the streets and buildings like cobwebs, and the heavy air…”

Later, Rook’s voice will be slower and softer, and her mug will be empty and her eyes will heavy. She will put her head back against the cushion, and put a little paper in the pages, and she will sleep. And Spite will take her back to the place in the bed that is hers, and put the body back in the place that is Lucanis’, because it does not matter to Lucanis if the body is in the bed before the morning comes or if it is not, except that it matters to Rook. Rook likes to wake and know they are there, so they are there. This needs no agreement between Spite and Lucanis at all.

But now she reads, and Spite listens, and does not sleep.

Spite Week 2025, prompt #7: Free Day!

One thing I like about the Dragon Age franchise as a whole is the demon designs. Yes, all of them, even when they change (a little or a lot). I like how the designs reflect the emotion that makes up the demon.

Well, Spite doesn't have a canon demon appearance, so far as I can tell. So my Free Day piece (which I've had in mind since the prompts went up) is my take on what Spite looks like as a demon (rather than a reflection of Lucanis). Rough paint because I did it entirely digitally and it's basically concept art rather than meant to be a polished piece.

The way I see it, the wings that manifest when Lucanis uses Spite abilities are a hint at the actual demon, so those were a must to include.

I made him vaguely feline because a lot of his attitude reminds me of a particularly spiteful cat (and from what I've gathered a lot of the fandom seems inclined to agree).

Lots of eyes because of the eye motifs around Lucanis, especially on his tarot card, but running down his back instead of clustered on his head to differentiate from a pride demon.

A single jagged smile because of the way Spite gives a very exaggerated (and feral/predatory) grin on Lucanis's features.

And finally, as alluded to in my "Home" piece this week, extra hands. Lots of claws (for hooking in the gut). All of them hands, kind of like a nug, rather than paws.

And because I like the idea that the spirit version shares some traits with the demon version (like how the Wisdom spirit in Dragon Age: Absolution still has the six eyes), I would think that Determination would still have the wings and some of the eyes too.

And that's all my entries for Spite Week!

Day 1 | Day 4 |Day 5 | Day 6 I did 4/7 for this fan week. As per usual, life happened, and admittedly, some distractions. But I'm glad I'm able to push through with some work done.

This is going to be my last event for this year. I definitely enjoyed the time I made art for this year's fan events, because Spite Week and a previous few were my first events as a very new artist (I have work from DA Kiss Week and Lucanis Week). All those fanweeks were almost consecutive, too. I hope you enjoyed what I had for this event. This is one for the bucket list. I do have more art to come (Yes, I'll come around posting something anyway. Especially Rook/Lucanis Art, since the hyperfixation train doesn't seem to stop on this one), but I also very much intend to take it slower this time, and in general: like focus on art studies, catch up on life outside art, actually finish Dragon Age Origins and more. I churned out a lot of art this second half of the year, yet I already feel already happy I produced a lot for 2025. I feel it's time to carve some deserved breaks and especially longer turnaround times into my art routine.

As usual, thank you @dread-red-queen for hosting this year's Spite Week! This contributed significantly to challenging my art skills a lot this year, and what I realized I needed to do better moving forward with my art. I also don't usually draw Spite so this was a good change for me. I hope to see you host some more of these types of events, and still witness your delightful energy in the Lucanis fandom lol.

The boy!! I wanted to draw how Spite looked in my Villa Dellamorte fic.

This was a lot of fun!! I don't normally draw backgrounds and I worked really really hard on those wings. Seriously, I had in a 3hr bird class with my bird nerd friend to learn to draw them accurately. And yes, if you're curious, those are indeed crow wings.
