Marco Benevento Celebrates New Album on Thursday in Williamsburg
Don’t try to pin down Marco Benevento if you can help it. He writes, he sings, he plays the piano, he plays other instruments, he produces, he’s a studio owner and an engineer, and he’s been making music with childhood friend Joe Russo since the turn of the millennium—first as the Benevento/Russo Duo, expertly working the Venn Diagram overlap of funk and jazz out of the tap bar at the old Knitting Factory in Tribeca and then later initially launching Joe Russo’s Almost Dead as a one-off at the NYC Freaks’ Freaks Ball XIII only to see it blossom into a touring act that sells out Red Rocks. And despite all of this, Benevento has somehow found the time to front his own band, mashing together pop, rock, jazz, R&B and experimental sounds for more than a decade. His most recent release, Let It Slide (stream it here), out last month on Royal Potato Family, offers “songs that straddle the lines between arty indie pop, ’70s soft rock and psychedelic soul,” says AllMusic. “Benevento has a knack for balancing memorable chorus hooks with a tactile, deeply textured and analog-brand of instrumentation.” While Glide Magazine calls it “an engaging mix of electro R&B and soothing grooves as the album mixes it up effectively and engagingly right from the start.” Celebrating the record’s release, Marco Benevento and the expert rhythm section of bassist Karina Rykman and drummer Dave Butler play Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday night. The identical-twin-brother duo the Mattson 2 opens the show.
