Watching My Hero Academia for the first time: Da movies! Two Heroes

HEY HEY HEY you didn't think I was going to leave you just like that, did you? It's NEVER really over (and I might watch/read Vigilantes too just you wait) (Lowkey think it might be up my alley bc was informed it's relatively procedural-y and I love a procedural even though I hate cops) (It's the Sherlock Holmes story enjoyer in me). I did my usual for this one, I did a list of the likes, a list of the dislikes, and a quick little ramble at the end! And I'll... keep watching the movies while I cook up my Grand Conclusion on the main series!

In case you're wondering yes I started writing up my Big Final Postmortem for this show and I got overwhelmed but I wanted to linger in this universe for a little while longer so! Here we are.

No Bad Movie is Short Enough

Since the film starts off with the American police here: FUCK PIGS, ACAB BABY

I know that the anime movie is Like This for a reason (money), but I do wish they actually went a little more all out with the animation for this! You have more time! Let's go ham on it! By which I mean, of course, my eternal gripe with Hero Academia: The utter DEARTH of environmental intrigue. Which yes, ik it's hard for the animators when Horikoshi doesn't give them a lot to work with– BUT THAT'S WHAT THE MOVIE IS FOR! GO HAM!

Also Izuku as exposition dump is CHEAP when done like this!

INCREDIBLY contrived plot and again. YOU HAVE SO MUCH EASY PEASY material for one of these one-off adventures that doesn't have much to do with The Big Plot so WHY are we bothering here

This movie has so little going on and it's not THAT long but it feels Eternal bro. Lmfao.

NOT IT BEING ALL FOR ONE ALL ALONG BRO WHYYYYYYYY YOU HAD THE LOVELIEST OPPORTUNITY FOR A ONE-OFF ADVENTURE AND YOU REALLY KILLED THE FUCKING VIBE THERE AND FOR NOTHING

Okay so this was a cute lil popcorn movie. I think they missed lowkey enormously hard when it comes to like. Coming up with a nice, self-contained story, and then narrowing down who to have there.

Which! Is a little odd, because they NAILED it with some of the filler episodes! So idk what's going on here– the plot takes halfway through the movie to kick in, the Dave Shield bit where he's trying to save All Might by getting fake villains that are actually real villains is just.... woof, brother. We DON'T need all these kids there (what are they doing) and we do not need to have the specter of All for One there!

But everyone is drawn SO CUTE even if they're dressed SO FUCKING UGLY OMFG. I know I sound stuck on this but how is this the first time we're seeing The Babiest Babies all dressed up and they're wearing THE UGLIEST CLOTHING ON PLANET EARTH.

I feel like you could make this work with like half the cast, half the plot (spread out across the whole damn movie ffs). Something like the Gentle Criminal shenaniganery is actually REALLY nicely movie shaped! Just something to keep in mind! But it was cute, and I do love adopting nerd daughters all the time! I'm just not at all surprised it wasn't a very tightly written story, because my GOD that turnaround time was TIGHT from announcement to screenings. I almost wish they'd taken more time on it (or expanded on a story bit in the anime! That'd be fine!)
