Dave DJ owes this man a job.
In 'Masters of the Airwaves' Dave writes:
"A great moment came in 1983 as I was about to go off to NY to compete in the New Music Seminar DJ competition with Mastermind. Just before we went, I heard this incredible record which was completely new, fresh, outstanding and my gut instinct screamed that this record was going to be big.
Lightning (Records) only ordered 500 copies, but I ordered another 2000 and sold them the same day... I was sure this record was going to be humungous and ordered another 10,000 copies on top of that!
My boss had palpitations and said, 'If this record doesn't sell, you won't have a job when you come back from the States!'. That trip seemed like a long one.
First thing when I got back, I had to ask how sales had gone. They'd been forced to re-order time and time again. Thankfilly, my gut instinct had been right.
The record, Herbie Hancock's 'Rockit' went on to be Top 10 in the UK charts and No. 1 in the US."
Jazz-man, composer, innovator and cultural activist. Happy birthday, Herbie!
