“Why the fuck would you trust a creepy guy in a white van. Dammit Katie.” - a TEOS flashfic
Dave couldn’t think.
He didn’t remember falling, but the twinkling stars above him and the rough asphalt he could feel against his back were good enough indicators of his current position. He did remember the van guy stabbing him a few moments prior, though. That explained the throbbing pain in his midsection.
Ah, well. He was far too exhausted to really get upset over this. At least Katie was safe now.
“Dave! Dave, I need you to stay awake, okay? If you pass out on me it’s over, do you understand?”
He let out a wet cough. Linda was kneeling over him, her blurry face twisted in concern. Something warm was dribbling down his chin; blood or bile, he couldn’t tell, the drug he’d been taking to keep sleep at bay was messing with his taste buds.
“Dave- shit, he’s losing blood fast. Mateo, go get my bag. Katie, you talk to him, don’t let him black out.”
The ground started to rock under him. Time was slipping in and out of his grasp, contracting and dilating in synch with the pulsing pain in his abdomen- like a heartbeat, or a universe blooming and withering over and over again-
Linda was gone. Katie was rambling somewhere on his left -he could feel her hand in his grip- seemingly in a panic, but that was probably his own fault. Always was, always had been.
And as the pleas of his companions and the clanking of medical appliances became more and more muffled in the cotton surrounding his mind, he started to hear it.
The Whale was singing. Calling out to him, on the threshold between the void and the waking world. He wasn’t sure how exactly he knew that, he just did.
The song was so alluring, both eerie and beautiful. Low and deep, it made his skull thrum pleasantly, his aching limbs trop their constant trembling. And for a moment, he was a little kid again, curled up against his mother’s chest as she softly rocked him back and forth, humming his favourite lullaby. The stars were spinning, pulsing, pulling him up, up, up into the infinite dark sky.
Dave felt his eyes roll back into his skull. Breathing slowing down, the lights over him dimming. He felt himself slip away.
Then Linda slapped him.
The shock was enough to snap him out of his daze; his surroundings came into focus again, and he stared at the nurse’s fevered expression with a startled moan.
“Don’t you fucking dare.” she sneered, fresh blood smeared on her neck and face. There was so much in that face, in that voice. Worry. Fear. Anger. Despair. Kinship. “You are not getting off that easy.”
“C’mon Dave, you fucking whimp.”
Mateo. His friend was back at his side, pressing something against his midsection- fuck, it hurt. He almost regretted coming back to himself. Almost.
“You gonna just lay there and kick the bucket? Hell no. Now, you hold on to that shitty life of yours and make it your bitch, or I will personally come wherever the hell you’re going so I can kick your ass, y’hear me?”
Dave blinked, before devolving into manic laughter; ow, ow, shit, that hurts real bad. Good, as long as he could still feel pain, things were okay...ish.
God, he couldn’t believe he’d been fucking stabbed by the most cliché, obviously evil creepy-white-guy-in-a-murder-van. That’d be a fun story to tell in a few years. Granted there was still someone to talk to by then.
“Fine, geez,” he wheezed, as the girls worked on the gash. His bloodstained lips strained in a shaky smile. “You dick.”

Guardian - TEOS oneshot
Mateo gently ran his calloused hand through Dave’s dark hair; it was tangled and damp from the sweat rolling down his temples, the pallid skin beneath it way too warm for the latino’s liking.
He pursed his lips; Linda had succeeded in extracting the bullet a few hours ago, but one of her tools must’ve not been as clean as she thought; Dave’s state had started to get worse shortly after surgery, his breathing growing labored and shallow, eyes glazing over and losing their focus.
When Dave had stopped answering Linda’s questions, the nurse figured the smaller male’s condition wouldn’t improve without help. So now here they both were, Dave lying prone on the operating table with Mateo watching over him, waiting for Katie and the nurse to come back with antibiotics. The tall man sighed; at least his partner was still awake. And he had to keep him that way.
“Okay Davie.” he said, grabbing a water bottle from the trolley next to him. “Imma need you to drink this, can you do that for me?”
The injured man only blinked, his half-lidded eyes staring at the blurry figure above him. Mateo swore under his breath; his friend was further gone than he’d thought. Could he even understand him?
“...gonna assume that’s a yes.” he sighed, sliding his hand under Dave’s head to lift it up. He held the bottle to the smaller man’s chapped lips and tilted it.
Dave didn’t react at first, the water running down his chin and damping his ruined shirt. But he seemed to catch on after a few seconds, latching onto the bottle and draining its content greedily. He shakily raised his arm to catch the plastic container, even though Mateo was already holding it for him.
If he wasn’t so delirious he’d probably be embarrassed by that fact. That dumb weirdo.
“C’mon now,” the latino whispered, “you just hold on a little longer, okay buddy? I’ve got you. I’ve got you.” @caustic-synishade
