This is what happens when your son buys an Amazon gift card for Christmas, and then you realize you have enough points to buy yourself a second #album for free. #soundandvision is #davibowie’s first #boxset; released in #1989, it sold remarkably well, especially since it cost about $100 in today’s dollars, and even won a @recordingacademy #grammy. It’s a must have if you’re really going through Bowie‘s music, because there are versions of songs and outtakes that don’t really appear anywhere else. It was also released during a very interesting, transitional period of Bowie’s career. At the end of the 80s, his former management agency, MainMan, lost rights to his back catalog, so it all belonged to Bowie again. That motivated him to rerelease his back catalog on Rykodisc. But on the other hand, while the 80s was probably his best selling decade, his most recent album, the one at the end of the 80s, has been a punching bag almost since it was released. He was about to give up on his solo career for a little while and start the band #tinmachine, which wasn’t loved by his fans but which in his estimation did him a world of good. He was frankly done with his back catalog, in other words, and since his last album wasn’t great, he was experiencing anxiety about becoming some old rocker who went up on stage to play his greatest hits year after year. He didn’t want to do that. He wanted to continually be creating something new, not going back to his old music. So this box set and the tour that followed was something of a compromise at the time — he was saying this would be the last time he’d ever played those old songs. He was committed to only going forward.
