The gyroscopic movement of the player’s first person perspective in Elite: Dangerous, complete with diegetic menu systems and status icons, are meant to emphasize the player as separate from the craft they fly. A constant stream of new ships, upgrades, and other changes that can occur throughout play means that the player should never feel that their ship is intrinsically linked to their player- they are in it, and they will use it, but they can put it aside once they are done with it.
