One of my favorite movies from last year. An eccentric, lonely inventor named Brian Gittins builds a robot out of random parts he finds around his home, and raises it as his own. It has the quirk of an old sci-fi movie, but has the bittersweet emotion of classical pieces like Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein.

I was surprised to learn that both Brian and Charles were characters who had been around for at least a decade. The concept for the movie itself was based on a short that was released on YouTube in 2017. If one doesn’t have the time or money to watch the feature, they should at least take the time to check out where it all began.

Brian and Charles is directed by Jim Archer from a screenplay by David Earl and Chris Hayward. The film stars Earl (Brian) and Hayward (voice of Charles) along with Louise Brealey, James Michie, and Nina Sosanya.

Brian and Charles hits theaters on June 17, 2022.
