I have noticed that many later albums by Phil Ramone felt like the expensive blockbuster galas. They were by the musicians who had a lengthy career, yet they also wished to do something that would get more press than their latest usually do. This shouldn't be understood as a criticism, many musical legends deserve to be cherished and Gladys Knight is definitely one of them. Thus, her collaboration with Ramone, Before Me, finds her covering the jazz standards, though she does sing them in an unexpected way. We know her soul prowess, but Before Me contains her trying to suit her voice to the style she didn't tackle yet. However, she does equip herself well for the challenge, surprising us with her incredible phrasing.
