Obit of the Day: SeaWorld's First Vet

Not long after SeaWorld opened in San Diego, California in 1964 they called in local veterinarian David Kenney to perform necropsies on some of its animals. He recommended that the animal park hire a full-time veterinarian to prevent future deaths. So they hired him.

Kenney who worked at the park for 8 years, was instrumental in transporting Shamu to SeaWorld in 1965 by developing a cradle to hold the killer whale as well as a special sunblock and moisturizer to keep Shamu's skin from becoming damaged. (Shamu lived at SeaWorld for 6 years.)

There was some controversy, though, when Kenney led an expedition to capture a gray whale calf, with the help of a Japanese harpooner. The whale was caught, with a puncture in its lung, and lived in captivity for two months. Several years later, Kenney tried again and this time caught a gray whale calf without harming it and brought it to SeaWorld where it was studied for a year and released.

A graduate of San Diego State University and University of California - Kenney was known for caring for any animal brought to his office - which was also his home. This included a house-broken, beer-loving anteater and a well-trained chimp. And be careful if you opened the freezer you might find the corpse of a penguin waiting to be dissected.

David Kenney died at the age of 77.
