A picture of Patti LuPone in concert with the San Francisco Symphony Pops at Davies Hall earning a standing ovation, July 27, 1996.
Roars of approval met her entrance; a standing ovation followed her exit. In between LuPone treated the audience at Davies Hall to the spectacle of the greatest living star of the American musical theater, at ease and in control, at the top of her glorious form.
The voice was supple, vibrant and strong —strong enough, in fact, to fill the huge hall without benefit of microphones in two encores near the end. She closed with complete scene, becoming Andrew Lloyd Webber’s demented and devastating Norma Desmond singing “As If We Never Said Goodbye.” When the fans burst into applause mid-song, at the soaring line “I’ve come home at last,” it was Desmond and not LuPone who silenced them with a frightened look: Here was a real master class on how to move an audience.

“Patti LuPone, star of “Evita,” was overcome with emotion early today as she was swamped by fans at a party at Bond’s International - Disco in Times Square celebrating her Tony award for best actress in a musical.
Patti was hugged and squeezed and kissed by fans and family. Then she danced all night, showing off a new offstage hairdo. She told us that she’ll be singing late shows Saturday nights at Les Mouches, in August and September, following a brief vacation.”
