Newman was starring on Broadway at the time as gigolo Chance Wayne in the original stage production of the Tennessee Williams play Sweet Bird of Youth (a role he reprised in the screen adaptation in 1962), and Winters, then twenty, was appearing as "Yonkers" in the original stage production of the musical Gypsy. David later appeared as a dancer and member of the Jets in the screen adaptation of West Side Story in 1961 and became a choreographer, producer and director, working with Ann-Margret and Raquel Welch (among others) on various television specials in the late 1960s and 1970s, choreographed numerous episodes of The Donnie and Marie Show starring Donnie and Marie Osmond in the late-1970s, helped Barbra Streisand with the choreography for A Star is Born in 1976, and worked as choreographer and creative consultant with Diana Ross on her television special Diana in 1981. He also choreographed the now infamous Star Wars Holiday Special in 1978, directed and produced countless low budget action movies, and worked with his baseball buddy Paul Newman when Paul appeared as a favor to David in the television auto racing documentary Once Upon a Wheel in 1971. Winters passed away in 2019 at the age of eighty, eleven years after Newman's passing in 2008 at the age of eighty-three.
