Peter Krause always complimenting co-stars. Always uplifting. Even though he himself seems to shy away from the accolades.

This Show
(I was in Boston all day doing Doctor Things, so this is a post that I wrote in September on my first attempt at a Div-related blog)
Six Feet Under is my favorite show or really maybe even just piece of media ever. I went home recently so I could be there when my parents watched the last five episodes. I’m not a rewatcher, but it’s the fourth time in two years that I’ve seen those five. I maintain that it is one of the best strings of episodes ever created. The reason I bring it up here is that when I think about media that is not just not sexist but actively anti-sexist, Six Feet Under is the first thing I think of. There are shows about men and masculinity that have awesome female characters (Justified, for example) or shows that have female stars and delve a bit into some good old fashioned grrl power (Veronica Mars is a good one). But Six Feet Under addresses lots of gendered issues without ever becoming a show about Women and Men. It makes characters’ gender feel adjectival, a part of them that is significant in every minute of their day, but not their nominal identity. Plus, a good half if not more of the main characters are female. And because of this, they have a lot more leeway with creating characters that have stereotypical characteristics. A lot of David’s friends in the fourth season, for instance, can be read as amalgams of gay stereotypes, and there are some female characters (e.g. Tracy and, some may say, Maggie) who can be read as creations borne out of misogyny, women only there to annoy. And will a misogynistic viewer feel or say terrible things about these characters? Probably. But it doesn’t work to make media that is designed to make sure shitty people can’t say bad things. And when people who make media create such a wide range of women, give such varied options of what it can mean to be female, I think they must be congratulated. And watched. And rewatched. And rewatched again. (Watch it watch it everyone watch it.)
