david hoffman
i found this photographer while looking for photographic examples of ‘social control’ and protests, projects related to the same concept I am interested in exploring. His work was so interesting as it really highlighted the divide that comes between those in power, and those citizens passionate about change. Those in power communicating through the police sent to settle the disputes and again bring these individuals back to conformity. However, nothing changes for the better without the small minority standing up for what them and others believe in. In his earlier work on his website, there were examples of protests he’d photographed about racism and the belief in equality, which is interesting now to see how far we’re coming
“for me, photo journalism has always been concerned with addressing the constraints of the state and the confrontation between state and citizen. Photographing protest is a visually exciting way of exposing the issues of power and inequality that photojournalism has always been concerned with. The interface between opposing forces of protest illuminates both the nature of the change being called for and the nature of the state opposing it. The photographs I produce are intended to make these forces visible to a wider group than just the participants and in that way to democratise protest so that all of society is to an extent involved in the issues that relatively few bring to the streets” -david hoffman
“it was widely believed that showing society its own image, exposing us all to our reflections, was a necessary catalyst for social change. The documentary photographer was a technician in the formation of a tomorrow, deconstructing society” -david hoffman
this is the impact I aim to have through this project, reflecting culture and society upon those within it, while also exposing the issues within it, to spark change within us
David Hoffman is a great example of a street photographer shooting people in everyday life, his focus is events or particular themes.
And I revisited his style when shooting in black and white.
This is his story. I just love how he explain this :)
