“June 2021” Back in the day, this was the building I'd walk to every morning to catch the People Mover to my job at @visitdetroit in the @gmrencen. The David Whitney Bldg was closed in 2000 and left vacant until 2014, when it was reopened (after much love and renovation by local architectural firm, @thekraemeredge) as the @AloftDetroit hotel. I was one of the lucky few invited to do a hard hat tour as the building was being renovated. “The David Whitney Building is a historic class-A skyscraper located at 1 Park Avenue, on the northern edge of Downtown Detroit, Michigan, within the Grand Circus Park Historic District. Until the 2014 renovation, the structure was listed at the address of 1550 Woodward Avenue. The building stands on a wedge-shaped site at the junction of Park Avenue, Woodward Avenue, and Washington Boulevard. Construction on the 19-floor structure began in 1914. It is planned for redevelopment as an Aloft Hotel in early 2015". (Wikipedia ~ the hotel opened December of 2014) This is the June photo for the new 2021 Detroit Events calendar, on sale through November 15th for 15% off.
