I have a quantum stylist! Can attest that it's a solid machine - it's even handling some heavy duty canvas sewing that I'm sure it wasn't built for. Otherwise, it has done great for cosplay and historical costumes.

Oh good! I have to say, using it this morning is making me think I’m not actually that bad at sewing, I’m just bad at sewing in the 1960s when my last machine was made.

I am loving the automatic seam start-and-end reinforcement and the thread clipper. Holy shit the thread clipper. I will waste so much less thread.

P sure the scent is "Fool's Gin," whatever that is. Fool's gold is cheap pyrite that looks kind of like gold, so presumabley fool's gin would give the initial scent of gin, but actually not really. So, this could mean ANYTHING! How great is that??

Well, we were debating that it might smell of juniper berries, but if so it’s a different kind of juniper to the one I’m usually familiar with. I think it’s fool’s gin mainly because it’s alcohol, but not drinkable :D But it’s a point about the scent.

Think there may be a spelling thing happening in the last question because allioli (Catalan), alioli (greater spain), and aoili (French) all seem to have different relationships with egg (never, sometimes, always, I think?)

OH! I didn’t even notice but it is Alioli, not aioli. That might explain some things. :D

It looked from the comment about "Poindexter" moving out "by August, September, tops," that Nursey is *planning* to drive him away. So, Bitty is probably going to be stocking up on popcorn over the summer.

Well that or Nursey was using a little reverse psychology; by suggesting Dex wouldn’t be able to hack it, he gets Dex to commit to living with him.

God yeah, every day I stumble on Tumblr themes that take me straight back to every single Sailor Moon fansite in 1999-2000. But the teenagers who made those sites back in the day are now in their 30s/40s and they're not the ones making these tiny lavender font themes on Tumblr; it's teenagers today. Is it youth = better eyesight, maybe?

Potentially part of it. But if it is teens primarily who make sites that are hard to read, then that’s sort of an explanation, I think. I mean, when you’re a teenager your brain is saying Grownup but literally everything around you is saying Child, and it’s really difficult to balance your desire for control of your own destiny with the restrictions on your life from school, your parents, the law, etc. 

So I can see how when a teen who maybe can’t control when or what they learn, what they wear or how they pray or who they date or ANY of that shit gets hold of a social media account that nobody knows about or controls, the urge to hypercustomize it is super strong. And let’s be real: readability is kind of...conservative. There’s only so much exciting stuff you can do and still keep your blog reasonable and legible, and why would you want to? You’re not reading it, you’re reading your dash. Nobody else is reading it either, most of the time, they’re reading on their dash, so who cares if they can’t read it easily? Why not make it as funky and personal or garish or flowery as you want?

For humidity, tabletop fountains used to be a big thing. My bro and s-i-l had about three, the cats LOVED them. Had to refill every day, it was super dry in their house.

Oh man, so noisy though. My mum bought me a water fountain for the cats and it’s just the loudest fucking thing in creation. Trickling water is the worst. :D At least the hiss of the humidifier is consistent.

I just watched Kitten Rescuers because I'm home sick and have no attention span. When I asked Netflix for more like that, it gave me a bunch of documentaries about drug addiction and reality shows about fashion. I can't help but notice none of those shows have anything to do with kittens or animal rescue. A+ algorithm, Netflix.

I have a feeling it recommends based on other viewers rather than based on actual content, since the former is way easier to quantify. Though that does mean a bunch of people who enjoy hard documentary and reality shows also watch Kitten Rescuers, which seems somewhat unlikely...

We used to have a cat who would perch on a nearby counter, watching intently, whenever I was cooking or baking anything. We used to tell her to pay close attention because we would expect her to make this dish next time.

I feel as though I’m quite lucky that the cats’ first attempts to get onto the kitchen counters resulted in ignominious defeat, because they now believe you literally cannot climb onto the counter. So anything I want safe from them can be stashed in the kitchen. This has not been ideal for my kitchen’s cleanliness but at least I know one surface in my home is free from Cat Butt.

I never realized that Deeb's paws were Polk-colored! Somehow that makes them even more adorable! <3

Yeah, under the black mottling she’s basically an orange tabby like Polk -- you can only see it in very specific places like her legs, though.

I grew up in Lubbock, it's funny seeing it (and TTU) mentioned in one of your stories. I can smell/taste the dust and feel the sun as I read <3

It was a little strange to write about! I’ve been around Texas quite a bit of course, but never to Lubbock, and I don’t know much history of the place. So I based a lot of what I was writing on the history research I did on a town in Oregon :D

*gasp* Sam, you don't RINSE your butter?! :p I was always the one on rinse and butter paddles duty becasue I was too small to churn it, but I could rinse and squish like a pro! My great uncles liked to humour us and let us "play farm" when we went to visit. Only in retrospect did I realize they didn't even KEEP milking cows at that point, and they bought in cream specifically for us to churn.

I never knew you should! Churning butter is great for kids because it keeps them occupied -- a friend of mine always brings a jar full of cream and a clean marble to let the kid churn with when she babysits :D

According to my mother's stories, an additional step is to knead the butter in cold saltwater. The idea is to get as much of the whey/milk solids out as possible. Otherwise the butter can go rancid or even mold. (My grandparents kept a Jersey. Butter making was not a hobby.)

I suppose it’s fortunate I can keep it in the fridge, where it’s at least less likely to happen. I’d no idea leaving a little buttermilk in could do that!

Do you know the trick with parchment paper is to roll it out across the pan with enough spare to fit the sides, and then cut at the corners the depth of the dish? Then when you press it in it will stay in shape and and side bits usually fold around each other so there's no gaps in the corners.

Oh yeah, I’m just too lazy to deal with it sometimes :D

Are you *sure* you can't ask someone like your neighbor to go get your supplies? Because yikes. You need to take it easy, which is kind of the opposite of going out in raw, rainy weather.

Well, I didn’t have to go very far, fortunately, and it’s good to move around a little. Retrains the vestibular whatnot and the limbic thingy.

Onions and garlic bad for kitties! (Not that all fried rice has that, but a general reminder for those who forget or never learned!)

Yeah, I was concerned about giving them any at first, but I gave them a little taste of rice and they seemed to handle it ok. I pick out small pinches of rice and bits of chicken to make sure exposure is very minimal, just in case, but I wouldn’t give them very much or do it very often. The sodium alone isn’t good for little kitties.

They are *focused* and *alert*, but you can totally leave the food there and go do... something. It will be FINE, they will keep their eyes on the food so nothing happens to it. Totally. Focused.

Their personalities in a nutshell :D Although Deebs was the one whose insistent curiosity actually convinced me to give them a tidbit in the first place -- she wouldn’t stop sniffing around the plate. Usually, that’s a sign to give her a little tidbit of whatever I’m eating, as long as it’s safe -- she does it very rarely, and it keeps her from trying to help herself, plus then it keeps her busy and I can eat my meal in peace. I was surprised she even ate the grains of rice I gave her, usually she’s very picky about people food, but after papping them with her paw for a few minutes to make sure they were safe, down they went.
