Your mother is going to confuse a lot of people with that kind of terminology.
I’ve thought about bringing it up, because it’s confusing and also I think most euphemisms for death are just to avoid the inevitable contemplation of our own mortality, but it’s just not the hill to die on with her. Usually she’s just texting me famous celebrity news (”So and so famous person made their transition”) so at least I don’t get confused. :D

Okay but AS I LAID IN BED THINKING ABOUT THIS THIS IS WHY I DON’T SLEEP
If we’re gonna try to do a straight across, sure, this is the most easy an elegant way to do it. I even like it, as I said last night! But if we bend the world to fit us, more than us bending to fit it, here’s what I do.
Mina is the captain, we’ll slot her into the “Mal” spot, she’s a born leader, brash, ridiculous, but cunning.
I actually will slip Haruka into the Pilot/Wash spot, but I’ll apply a lot of Zoe’s backstory to her. They served together, Haruka is kind of an idiot but she always means well and she would do anything for Mina, and she loves her ship and understands how to use it. I give her more of a “I can run the ship through the building, is that an idea?” edge versus Wash’s “get the hell out of dodge” mentality but please know she still plays with her matchbox ships on the dash in her downtime.
Michiru I’ll put into Zoe’s spot HANG ON WITH ME. Michiru is a bitter-ass former debutante whose family lost everything in the war, being on the wrong side. She has nothing but reasons to hate the current regime, and instead of crying about it, she turned all of her discipline into learning how to be an assassin. She was very much freelance until she met Haruka in bar in some backwater planet.
She was supposed to kill MIna, but that didn’t really work out. Sometimes Mina has luck, sometimes Mina has cunning, and sometimes she has Haruka. Mina trusts her now, in that way that inconvenient allies trust each other, because she knows Michiru wouldn’t hurt Haruka by killing her or letting her be killed. Michiru is talented and terrifying.
Rei did not really set out to become a companion, but when her father sold her up the river after her father’s death, the rules and routine and ritual and ceremony and possible power became her shrine. It was a way to her own money, her own life, and she prides herself on her ability to do what she wants and how she wants it outside of office hours. She is gonna punch Mina in her fucking smug stupid face.
Mako takes up the Jayne spot, and she really loves the idea of shooting first and then figuring out who’s who. She still loves cooking and baking, though, and has to occasionally be convinced that punching someone is not negotiation in a spice market.
Usagi is of course, Kaylee, because what the fuck else was I going to do with her let us all be honest here. She doesn’t have the sense god gave a field mouse, but she has a weird bond with general mechanics and so she is absolutely essential to the team.
Pluto is the Book spot, philosophical and strange, though clearly one of the good ones. Mina doesn’t care much for her conversations on human nature, or the way they seem to suggest that occasionally Mina is utterly predictable.
Hotaru and Ami end up being River and Simon because they are what I have left over, I am not going to pretend I somehow clevered this out. BUT! You could work with it. Ami being the smart doctor isn’t really that much of a stretch, I actually find the idea that she’d have both the courage and cunning to steal back Hotaru to be the leap there. What if Ami basically dumped her entire fortune to do it, and this is where she’s stuck now? WHAT IF SHE AND MICHIRU HAD KNOWN EACH OTHER BEFORE THE WAR IN WEALTHY CIRCLES AND HATED EACH OTHER. But now they have to fucking get along?
Hotaru, well, I would remove the things that make me feel weird about River, including the sort of infantilization, but I would clearly have her be both gifted, and traumatized. I would just allow her to be traumatized like a grownup.
Okay, I know the Batfam loves cats, but this is getting ridiculous. I came home tonight to find Red Robin on my ceiling, and then suddenly my little gray cat bolted out from under my bed, which she NEVER does when there are people she doesn't know in the house. I lower myself to the floor and the tiniest Robin is under there and he nearly kicks me in the face. Guys I have an older cat who loves attention, focus on him please. #OnlyInGotham #StopKidnappingCatsThough #DoesBatmanKnowWhereYouKidsAre

Canon: Rei genuinely thinks Usagi is an idiot crybaby, which I put here because USAGI IS. One of the things I love and cherish about Usagi is how she can rise above that, which has the power it does because it’s true, you know? And Rei is under no illusions about who Usagi is, but what’s beautiful in it all is how Rei believes FROM THE BEGINNING that an idiot crybaby isn’t ALL Usagi can be. She may need a heel in the ass, which Rei is only too happy to provide, but Usagi CAN do it, and that’s one of the things I love most. But yeah, Rei knows what Usagi is, and loves her anyway, AND DON’T MIND ME I’M JUST HAVING EMOTIONS

Also I fucking love your art style, you don't suck!!
I know I know - I started looking back at some of the stuff I’ve drawn over the years and I like, realized that I liked a good bunch of them too. It’s just...so easy to forget all the good ones and remember only the bad, aborted attempts sometimes, and while i feel really confident in doing some things, I’ve felt really out of sorts/embarrassed/ashamed of other things.
2019 is the year I actually do something about that, though! I’m gunna keep practicing until I get as good as I want to be

PINTEREST IS STILL THE DEVIL but for the sake of art i will do what i must. it’s so weird that I’ve been drawing like, since i was 11 and it literally never occurred to me to use references for things like coloring and shading - i can be so dumb sometimes
