Happy 100th birthday to beloved author Rosemary Sutcliff (born December 14, 1920). In honour of the occasion, I’ve put together a Q&A for any admirers of her books to take part in.

Well, there’s a strange thing.

I finished reading Patricia Southern’s book on Roman Britain yesterday, and there was a mention that at Viroconium (Wroxeter), the skeleton of a man with some coins with him was discovered beneath the remains of a hypocaust.

Now I’m reading Dawn Wind by Rosemary Sutcliff, part of which is set in the ruins of Viroconium. The main characters hide from some baddies in the hypocaust of an old house, where they find the remains of the house’s owner, along with his money, who also hid down there but was too old and weak to get out again.

There’s a weird wee coincidence for you.

I love that, though. I love when you’re reading historical fiction and the author slips in something you recognise from the archaeology or the written records. :D
