Honestly the only thing that’s going to save the Dawn Wings is when a certain Sword-Weilding Tiger-Riding Lesbian General Yue first-time-we-met-her-she-gave-us-lots-of-diamonds, somehow-won-the-NPC-popularity-contest-despite-not-being-in-our-storyline-yet Qianshuang shows up to command us.
Dear Students,
Here is some current work from classmate alumnae D. Wing.
You can see more of her work here and here.
I remain a huge fan,
Prof. Yeti
WU’s January 2016 #YAOTM is....Dawn Wing ‘05!!!
Thanks to Jennifer Starkey ‘05 (@bearfax) for this month’s submission!
Dawn was one of my art department buds in 2005, and after graduating she worked as an ESL instructor in NYC (her city of origin - Dawn is specifically from: Flushing!!!), where she was advocating for youth from all kinds of backgrounds, and working with zines was one of the ways she connected with her classes. I didn't see her for a long time because I live on the other side of the country! Dawn showed up on my radar in the last few years when artist Lynda Barry started teaching courses at UW Madison - Lynda posted a photo of her class on her blog and I was like...
IS
THAT
DAWN
WING
ahhhhhhhhh!!!
THEN it turns out that Dawn was studying Library Science at UW Madison, and she was super into zines. My BFF is ALSO a librarian who is super into zines. They both were at a zine thing together and totally jammed, and I was like THIS IS AMAZING I LOVE A SMALL WORLD. Anyway: the point is that not only is Dawn super into zines: she makes totally radical, beautiful, and authentic comics. You can see them on her tumblr (dwingcomics.tumblr.com) and you can also get printed copies of her comics and zines. These days she is a librarian at a community college on Long Island and is always continuing her art practice. This summer, I got to see her here in Portland and we went and picked peaches on Sauvie Island and Dawn is So Positive about her art making and simultaneously encouraging me with my photography, and is always noticing opportunities to involve and work with others, and help make zines, comics, and art more accessible for all. Dawn Wing is rad! I hope you look at her stuff! Cool! Thank you!
