Superhero Spotlight: Shade
The world’s first drag queen superhero, Shade puts another feather in the Mutant subspecies cap for covering another area of diversity in the drag community.
Shade was announced towards the end of 2018 as a new Mutant superhero who also holds the title of the first Drag Queen superhero. Making her first appearance this month in Iceman Vol. 4 #4, Shade is introduced as an entertainer at the club Dazzler has been so notable for covering, the two appear to be at least friends if not colleagues and being attached to such a fan-favourite can only boost Shade’s image.
While there is nothing much more that can be known about the character from her one appearance, we do know how the character appears and what her power is.
Shade is capable of teleporting through a pocket dimension contained within her fan. Not only is it always a good idea to have a teleporter on side but also it adds to the drag queen mystique of always whipping out a fan for dramatic tension.
Being a comic-book originated character, Shade has not yet appeared in television of film, however, according to the character’s co-creator, Shade was inspired by alumni of RuPaul’s Drag Race The Vixen, All Stars 4 winner Monet X Change, superhero cosplayer Dax ExclamationPoint and reference model Shea Couleé. For this reason, any of these four queens could easily portray the character, especially Shea as she was the one who physically inspired the character.
However, as she has already cosplayed as the character, a good choice for the character would be Shea’s fellow Drag Race sister Nina Bonina-Brown, as shown on her social media when the character first debuted as being able to look the part. Even Shangela I think would be an out-of-the-box choice (sorry couldn’t resist) due to the fact she has appeared in both TV and film.
So, even though the character doesn’t have a rich history in LGBT lore, she is the first drag queen superhero and for that reason has made history. Now all she needs is to become more developed as a character and be able to gain a mainstream following.
